Notes

From http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~anderson/va/trees/robert2.html

Robert Anderson's death in 1712 is recorded in the St. Paul parish vestry book when an entry is made that he is deceased and being replaced as church vestryman.

From the 1704 rent roll it appears likely that Robert, David, John and Richard were the oldest sons and that Matthew, Thomas were younger and had not established their own plantations as of 1704. William appears in the King William County rent roll when it is known that he had relocated. Notice also that there is an additional John Anderson in this list I suspect is his younger brother John who appears to have died about 1706 according to St. Paul's vestry book which opens with an entry about care for his children.

Take caution, It is unproven that David, John, Richard, Matthew, William, and Thomas are sons of Robert Anderson, Sr. Indeed some may be sons of his brother Bartelot Anderson.

Robert Anderson, Sr Memorial Photos Flowers Edit Share Learn about upgrading this memorial... Birth: 1641 New Kent County Virginia, USA Death: 1712 New Kent County Virginia, USA

Son of Richard Anderson. Husband of Cecelia Poindexter Massey, married 1660.

Robert died in 1712 in New Kent county, Virginia colony, aged 71 years. The land office register, April 16, 1683 states he is grantee for 727 acres of land in New Kent county for importing 15 persons. He was Vestryman for St. Peter's Parish in 1686, and also for St. Paul's Parish from 1704 until his death. The vestry records show Capt. Robert Anderson was present at a meeting on June 21, 1712. The next meeting was August 8, 1712 and the attendees elected a replacement for Capt. Robert Anderson who was "recently deceased".

"The Anderson Family" by Edward Lowell Anderson states that on July 4, 1635, Richard Anderson, age 17, left England for the colonies, and was followed by Richard Anderson, age 53, presumably his father. Before sailing both took the oath of allegiance and supremacy. These 2 men appear to have been the progenitors of the Anderson family of Hanover county, Virginia. They intermarried with Masseys, Cloughs, Poindexters, Overtons, Garlands, Dabneys and Sheltons.

However there is a patent record in 1666 that showshe was an adjacent landholder to Moses Davies in the delta of thePamunkey River at the head of the York River an arm of the ChesapeakeBay. It is very likely that he had been born in Virginia. At that timeant travel back to England would have earned you an additional head rightupon your return to Virginia. It was common practice among land ownersto send their children back to England for education. If the family tradition of "Ye Andersons of Virginia", pages 231-288, Volume 11, Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly, Columbus, Ohio,1908; are cor rect, Robert's father may be the Richard Anderson, mentionedin mid 1600's York County, Viriginia Court Records. Samuel Davies of Hanover County wrote that on 02/14/1754 inconversation with Adam Anderson in London, Adam said "his uncle was thegrandfather of the Andersons in Hanover Co., Virginia." Adam Andersonwas a clerk in the South Sea Trading House of London, and a member of asociety for the propagation of Christianity in the colonies. SamuelDavies is noteworthy as the champion of the appointment of GeorgeWashington as CiC. The problem with this idea, is that the earlyAndersons were in Virginia much to early to be uncles of Adam, but muchgets lost in the relating of stories. However Samuel Davies grandfatherwas Moses Davies who was a neighbor of Robert Anderson in 1666. The ancestors of Robert Anderson are very speculative and there aresome conflicts between several authors'publications. The first h

The Immigrant

The name Anderson is Scandinavian, and the remote founder of the family came with the Danes to England and to Scotland.

The Anderson Family by Edward Lowell Anderson states that on July 4, 1635, Richard Anderson, age 17 left England for the colonies, and was followed July 31, by Richard Anderson, Sr., age 53, presumably his father, who departed from the Port of London, on the ship "Merchant's Hope," on July 31, 1635. (Ref. Hotten's List of Emigrants to America, 1600-1700). Before sailing both took the oath of allegiance and supremacy. These seemed to have been the progenitors of the Anderson family of Hanover County, Virginia. They intermarried with Massies, Cloughs, Poindexters, Overtons, Garlands, Dabneys and Sheltons.

Robert Anderson, Senior died 1712, aged nearly 72 years. The land office register, April 16, 1683 states him as a grantee for 727 acres of land in New Kent County for importing fifteen persons. He was Vestryman for St. Peter's Parish, 1686, and for St Paul's Parish, 1704-1712, until his death. Issue 9 children.

Robert Anderson I, according to historian William Pope Anderson arrived in Hanover County between 1670-1677. In 1666 he owned land on the delta of the Pamunkey River from the south in the eastern part of what is now Hanover County, Va. St. Peter's Parish vestry Book of Nov. 25,1686 speaks of Robert Anderson helping in "clearing ye highways." He apparently moved as both he and his son, Robert Anderson Jr. appear in the New Kent County Quit Rents of 1704/1 with respect to 900 acres and the other regarding 700 acres. He appears in the St. Paul Parish vestry book from 1706-1712.

Robert Anderson I married Cecelia Massie, a daughter of Peter Massie and Lucelia Poindexter. They had a large family.
