About Robert Carson Ashby

ROBERT "CARSON" ASHBY, 80, of 618 Chestnut Street, Hagerstown, passed away on Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Williamsport Nursing Home.

Born February 24, 1930, he was the son of the late, James Franklin and Elston Ida (Whitacre) Ashby.

He served his country in the United States Army.

Before making a career of truck driving, he worked for Fairchild Aircraft. He was a retired Teamster truck driver with more than 35 years and over million miles of safe driving. He drove for many over the road companies across the country such as Pony Express and Roadway plus local companies such as Plummer Construction, Inc. and Sword Trucking. He also hauled cars for Baker Driveaway, Alpha X and M & G Convoy. He retired from Signal Delivery (Sears) in 1992.

He volunteered his time by transporting patients to and from appointments for the ARIC John Hopkins research project in downtown Hagerstown and was a bowler on the senior league at Longmeadow Bowl. He was a very talented life time wood worker and enjoyed building furniture and all types of wood working.

He was a loving husband, wonderful father and a great grandfather.

He never met a stranger.

He is survived by his wife, Jackie Mae (Conley) Ashby whom he married on February 21, 1958; daughter, Joenda Kaye Ashby of Hagerstown and grandson, Jesse Curtis Reed and friend Ashley Stahle; daughter, Joann Roberta and husband, John Fitzgerald Barnes of Hagerstown and granddaughter, Jalyn Elizabeth Barnes and friend, Cody Rau; daughter, Debra Frances Gavens of Columbus, Georgia; granddaughter, Ashley Barrera; grandson, Jon Gavens. He was preceded in death by one brother, James Luther Ashby; six sisters, Wilda V. Davis, Emily R. Houser, F. Madelon Hershberger, Doris M. Byers, Gladys A. Smith and Juanita A. Gigeous.

Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd, Hagerstown. The Rev. Walt Roberts will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 after 9:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

The family strongly requests the omission of flowers and memorial donations be sent to Williamsport Nursing Home Employee Fund, 154 North Artizon Street Williamsport, MD 21795. The family members wish to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Williamsport Nursing Home for the compassionate, loving care that Carson received while living there.
