Robert Barnett and various family members apparently participated in a large family migration from Ireland in 1730 to America. It is said that they are the branch from which most of the Barnett’s in the South have sprung.
However, much uncertainty exsits as to whether the following is an exact summary of this important Barnett family. The following appears to be the best compromise between conflicting data.
In Ireland, the Barnetts were prominently associated with the political life of Belfast and Londonderry with their educational and benevolent institutions. One of them served in defense of Londonderry. This family is said to have been the founders of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
The Presbyterians of course were not popular with the Catholic Irish and discontent as well as persecution at home gave them the resolve to finally immigrate. The members of the wealthy extended Barnett family that came to America about 1724 are listed in the section for John E. Barnett Sr.
In 1830 Lancaster was a wild and dangerous Indian Country. One fails in the attempt to describe the perils of the frontier settlers of these times. So its natural that the Barnett family began looking for a safer home. Thus it was that in around 1740 they relocated to Goochland County, Virginia where they were to live for many years growing tobacco on land that they bought from the Mayo family.
The family bought extensive land holdings that they could subdivide as children got older and started their own families. Thus the Barnett clan stayed on their Goochland property as the county subdivided into Albelmarle, County in 1744, then, Amherst County in 1761,and finally Nelson County in 1817.
But we need to back up to 1720 in County Cavan, Ireland near Londonderry, for this is where 18 yr old Robert Barnett started his first family by marrying 17 yr old Mary Agnes Montgomery. They were to have 5 children in Ireland before Mary dies probably as a result of the rigerous ocean trip to America. Exact dates are uncertain but apparently 27 yr old newly widowed Robert marries 27 yr old Rachel Ann Montgomery felt to be a relative of Mary Agnes. They were to have 10 children including the important Col. Joseph Barnett.
Joseph participated in General Braddock’s battle at Ft. Pitt. He became a Colonel in the Northern wing of the American army during the Revolutionary War. Joseph met his brother Alexander, with General George Washington at the surrender of Cornwallis. The brothers agreed to meet after the war in Kentucky in 1782, finally meeting in Elizabethtown.
Joseph later founded Barnett’s Station and Barnetts Fort, near present day Hartford Kentucky in Ohio county, before 1790. Colonel Joseph’s property exceeded 35,000 acres between Elizabethtown and the Green River. The influence of Joseph Barnett on the history of Hardin County, Kentucky is noted by historians to be large and lasting. Most of his brothers and sisters moved to Kentucky because of Joseph and his immense land holdings.

Father Robert died on his Amherst, Virginia property in 1772 at the age of 70. His wife, Rachel Ann, apparently died some 28 years later in 1800 at the age of 98 while visiting relatives in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

ROBERT BARNET, born near Londonderry, Ireland, in 1703 (9), emigrated to Pennsylvania with his father’s family in about the year 1729, locating in Hanover Township, now Dauphin County. He, together with his brother James, removed to Virginia sometime following the year 1734, each having previously married (10). Robert settled on Hat Creek in what is now Nelson County, VA, and was living there in 1750. We do not know the name of his wife, and the only members of his family of whom we know are the following:

Joseph born probably in Pennsylvania in about 1730 married Abigail Mills died in November 1796 while a resident of Ohio County, Ky.

Robert born probably in Pennsylvania in about 1732 killed in the Braddock campaign in 1755.

Alexander born probably in Virginia in 1745 died in Ohio County, Ky. in 1819 married 1769 Jane Montgomery, born probably in Virginia in 1748 died in Ohio County, KY in 1825.
