Went To BC about 1862 and took part in the Cariboo gold rush, and in 1867 in the short-lived rush on Cedar Creek at Quesnel Lake.
in 1869 formed a partnership with George Adolphus Vieth (Halifax), purchased Willow Ranch on Keithley Creek at Cariboo Lake. Had post Office, store, saloon, hotel.
Added partner Robert McNab, opened 2nd store at Little Horseshoe & Keithley Creeks. Acquired a number of lucrative claims on Little Snowshoe.
1884 Vieth & Borland puchased 150 mile stopping-house on Cariboo Rd. Raised cattle, grain, post office, saloon & hotel.
1888 Borland came upon fighting over the shooting of a Gitksan Indian, continued to Victoria & strode into the Prov Legislature & announced " Gentlemen, do you know there is a war on?"
1892 opened another hotel, store and saloon in quesnel forks.
Borland acquired William Pinchbeck ranch on Williams Lake called Kinlochaline, sold to prov govt in 1913 it became the pac Railway terminus in 1919 & Location of Williams Lake.
Marriage ended in divorce after she spent a lot of his money & left him.
Left everything to neice Mabel Borland.
