It is believed that he came from Northern Ireland and settled in Pennsylvania by 1735.

In Wills: Abstracts and Administrations 1713-1825: Chester County, PA from Will Book B appears BROOMFIELD, ROBERT. February 22, 1739/40. Adm. to James Shields and Geo. Stuart.

Another account of the origin of the family was written by Joseph Brownfield, a son of Basil and greatgrandson of Robert (I) Brownfield [greatgreat grandson of Charles and greatgreatgreat grandson of this Robert]. He says: "The origin of the Brownfields is: One Brownfield, an Irishman, went to Scotland and married a Scotch lady by name of Grier, and had a son, Robert, who came to America with a wife and family. He [Charles] came to Fayette county and camped under a large white oak tree east of Smithfield, about one half mile east of where grandfather and grandmother Robert and Mary Brownfield are buried. He [Robert (I)] was my great-grandfather, and had a son named Robert, who was my grandfather.
