About Robert de Brus
There is some debate re. the parentage of Robert. However, most commentators have concluded that he is the son of Isobel de Brus and Roger Mauduit and that Robert took the surname of his mother, rather than his father. This seems to have been confirmed and recognised by 1243 when William de Percy, gave 10 liberates of land in Tadcaster to Roger Mauduit which were to be held after his death by Robert de brus, his son and heir.
In January 1246, an inquisition was held re. rents in Tadcaster granted by William de Percy. The jurors found that William de Percy gave to Roger Mauduit and Robert his son, and the issue of Robert, twenty shillings rent to be received yearly in the mills of Tadcaster.
Roger Mauduit must have died about this time as later in 1246, Elena, the widow of William de Percy claimed against Robert de Brus the third part of 10 liberates of land and 20 shillings rent in Tadcaster as dower.
On 23 Apr 1265, Robert de Brus was one of the jurors at Snaiton, near Pickering) to determine if the Prior of Malton owed suit of court for a tenement.
On 5 January 1267, Robert de Brus of Pickering had a safe conduct to the king's court until midsummer. "provided that the king had not given his lands". This suggests that Robert was involved in the Baron's war against Henry II. He was probably aged about sixty at this time and died shortly afterwards.
