Robert Carter was born 1665/6, likely in England, and died 7 NOV 1751 in Killingworth (Clinton), Middlesex, Connecticut. Parents are not known. He is not to be confused with Robert Carter, of PA
It is said “he came from Bristol in England” before 1700 to Guilford or Killingworth. This is an erroneous statement. It originally came from statement made in historical record he came in 1710 and "was a shipbuilder from Bristol" which was an assumption by the author that it was England. He was from Bristol RI, which split from Bristol MA, which split from Plymouth Colony.

Robert's wife's name was Hannah; no last name was listed in the early records, where they lived. Neither is there a record of Robert or Hannah's parentage nor their places or dates of birth. They had seven children whose names were
Hannah died sometime before November 1734 as there is a record of Robert's marriage on 27 November 1734 to Mary Bennett.

"Hannah Lucas CARTER, b. 1668 d. 5 Sept 1732. She is reported as being the daughter of William and Hester Clark CORNWELL LUCAS. She married Robert CARTER 19 April 1694 in Bristol County, Rhode Island. She was the mother of Samuel, John, William, Sarah, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Joseph, and Mary CARTER. To this day, no one has been able to find the marker for her husband, Robert, or his second wife, Mary BENNIT. However, there was a charge in his probate for his tombstone. ..."

Incorrect merge, Born abt 1665 married, 19 Nov 1684, Robert of Guilford came alone not with family. Married Hannah Lucas and possibly Mary Bennett. he had in all 6 children in Connecticut [corrected May 2017]
