Robert Carter was born 1665/6, likely in England, and died 7 NOV 1751 in Killingworth (Clinton), Middlesex, Connecticut. Parents are not known. He is not to be confused with Robert Carter, of PA

It is said “he came from Bristol in England” before 1700 to Guilford or Killingworth. This is an erroneous statement. It originally came from statement made in historical record he came in 1710 and "was a shipbuilder from Bristol" which was an assumption by the author that it was England. He was from Bristol RI, which split from Bristol MA, which split from Plymouth Colony.

He married

  1. on 19 APR 1694 in Rhode Island to Hannah. Perhaps she was Hannah LUCAS, daughter of William LUCAS and Hester Clark CORNWALL, born 1668 in Killingworth (Clinton), Middlesex, Connecticut.
  2. on 27 November 1734 to Mary Bennett.

biography

From "Daniel Carter - Pioneer of 1850" by Delia Putnam Montgomery March 6, 1976 "LDS Historical database"

Our early convert and pioneer, Daniel Carter had a surname of occupational origin; it meant driver of carts. The name is found in the Latinized form of Cartarius in records of the year 1275 in Oxfordshire, England. Later the name was changed to the French form of le Cartere or le Carter and finally to Carter.
The first known of our Carter ancestors in America, was a man by the name of Robert Carter, a carpenter and shipwright who lived in Killingworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut. the latter was first known as Killingworth, County of New London, Colony of Connecticut in New England.
Robert's wife's name was Hannah; no last name was listed in the early records, where they lived. Neither is there a record of Robert or Hannah's parentage nor their places or dates of birth. They had seven children whose names were

  1. William
  2. John,
  3. Samuel,
  4. Benjamin,
  5. Joseph,
  6. Nathaniel
  7. Mary

Hannah died sometime before November 1734 as there is a record of Robert's marriage on 27 November 1734 to Mary Bennett.

notes

From "GRAVESTONE OF INDIAN RIVER CEMETERY, CLINTON, MIDDLESEX CO., CT"

She married Robert CARTER 19 April 1694 in Bristol County, Rhode Island. She was the mother of Samuel, John, William, Sarah, Benjamin, Nathaniel, Joseph, and Mary CARTER.
