Robert Childres was the son of Henry and Susannah (Goolsby) Childers and was born in Amherst County, Virginia about 1762. He was married in Amherst County by the Baptist minister, Reverend Benjamin Coleman, 27 March 1783. His wife, Nancy Pryor, was the daughter of F. Nicholas Pryor of Amherst County, where she was born 1764. She died 1820 in Grant County, Kentucky. Robert married again, 27 June 1822 to Nancy Coleman, probably a widow. She died before 1830 when Robert was listed on the census as the lone inhabitant of his household. He died in 1831.
Robert Childress traveled with a Baptist Church group to establish, a church on the Dry Ridge between the Kentucky and the Licking Rivers in Woodford Co., KY in 1791. Their sponsor was a Baptist church in Culpeper Co., VA, but there is no evidence that Robert Childress lived in Culpeper Co. He did live in Greenbrier Co., VA. There may have been no church in Greenbrier that would, or could, sponsor them and they had to take their case to the Culpeper church. Robert Childres was one signer of the covenant and moved his family to what is now Grant County, Kentucky. He is listed on the tax lists of Kentucky, in Bourbon County in 1792. In 1795 Robert Childers, Henry Childers, William Arnold and John Pryor received deeds to land, with the deeds recorded in Harrison County. Again there is no evidence that they lived in Harrison County; in fact the lands of Robert and Henry Childers and William Arnold were adjacent to each other and were in the area now within Grant County. The one thing these three men had in common is that their wives were all surnamed Pryor.
Robert's ten children are named in a deed he registered in Grant County, Kentucky 1822, wherein he gave, or sold for $1.00, his estate to his children, thus ensuring that his property would go to his children and not be a part of the estate of his second wife. On this deed he spelled the name Childres.

Surname has also been reported to be Childress.
