• Robert Clement, immigrant ancestor of the Clements in America, was born in England, about 1590. and came to America in 1642. landing at Salisbury. He was in Andover also in 1642, and removed to Haverhill in 1643, where he settled and became a prominent citizen. He was deputy to the general court from 1647 to 1653 inclusive. His family came with him probably, except his youngest daughter, who remained in Coventry, Warwickshire, England, until 1652, when she too came to Haverhill and soon afterward married John Osgood, of Andover. Robert Clement became associate judge of the county court and was early appointed to give oath of fidelity to the inhabitants of Haverhill. He was frequently appointed on committees to set off land and fix limits for the pioneers. He is recorded as being "a man of rare integrity and superior talents." He must have been an inn-keeper in 1653, when he was given permission by the Salisbury court to sell wine in Haverhill. He owned the first grist mill built in Haverhill. He died on the farm where he first settled, in Haverhill, September 29, 1658. His will was dated September 6, 1658, when not all of his children were in New England. He mentions his wife, sons Job, John, Abraham and Daniel; sons (in law) Moses Pingrin, Abraham Morrill and John Osgood ; "to my children's children that are in New England ; to Mr. Ward, our minister." Children : 1. Job; was the first tanner in Haverhill; his marriage to Margaret Dummer is the first marriage recorded in the town. He was given a quarter of an acre of land near the mouth of Mill Brook, on the south side of Water street, where now stands a tenement house, and there he built the first tannery in town. • (II) Robert Clement, son of Robert Clement (I), was one of the grantees representing the settlers in the deed from the Indians to the settlers of Haverhill. He was a cooper by trade, and the first to work at that business in the town. He was a town officer, county commissioner and associate judge. He took the prescribed oath of allegiance in November, 1677, and was living in 1692. He lived on Water street near the site of the Exchange block. He married, December 3, 1652, Elizabeth, died March 27, 1715, daughter of John Fane, of Ipswich and Haverhill. Children: 1 John, born September 16, 1653; mentioned below. 2. Daniel, born July 3, 1655; died January 10, 1679-80, at New Jersey. 3. Abraham, born July 14, 1657; married. May 10, 1683, Hannah Cove. 4. Hannah, born October 2, 1660. 5. Fane, born March 2, 1661-62; married, November 21, 1688, Sarah Hoyt. 6. Nathaniel, born September 6, 1663; died at Saco, Maine, April 16, 1680. 7. • (III) John Clement, son of Robert Clement (2), born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, September 16, 1653, died May 16, 1692. He took the oath of allegiance in Haverhill in 1677. In 1676 he received from the town eight shillings six pence for services as a soldier in King Philip's war, in Lieutenant Benjamin Swett's company. The inventory of his estate was filed June 10, 1692. He married, February 22, 1676, Elizabeth Ayer. Children: 1. Samuel, born November 2, 1677; married, July 11, 1705, Ruth, daughter of Joseph and granddaughter of Joseph Peasley. 2. Job, born February 20, 1679; married Mehitabel Ayer. 3. • Among the early settlers of Essex County there are few who did more to upbuild the new state and ensure its successful permanence, than did Robert Clements of Haverhill and his descendants. They did well .... etc.
• Robert Clements, sen., was born in England, about 1590, presumably in Warwickshire, as his youngest daughter, Mary, lived in the city of Coventry until 1652, when she rejoined her family in Haverhill. Robert landed at Salisbury in 1642, and settled that summer in Haverhill with his wife(*) (her name is unknown), his sons John and Robert, jr., and the older daughters, Lydia and Sarah. His oldest son, Job, had preceded the family by a year or two, and was one of the twelve men who settled Pentucket (now Haverhill) in 1640. .... etc.

  • 9. Daniel. The only record of Daniel, besides in the will, is his reported harrassing of a tax collector at Hampton, N. H., in 1683 (Prov. Papers, N. H., 1: 551).
• 2 Job (Robert1), born in England about 1618 ; died at Dover, N. H. in (will 4 Sept., proved 9 Nov., State Papers, N. H. 31 : 259) 1682. Preceding his father as a colonist, he took the oath of fidelity in Ipswich, 1639, and the following year, with eleven others, founded Haverhill. Freeman in 1647, he was chosen constable, the first in the town. Newbury needing a tanner, his trade, offered him a freehold in 1652, which he refused. Signing at Haverhill, in 1653, the petition for the remission of Major Pike's fine. Job later moved to Dover, und there .... etc.

  • (t) Mary Clements Osgood suffered through the witchcraft delusion of 1692. Subjected to the touch of blindfolded girls ("afflicted persons"), she was accused of being a witch. Arrested, and examined 8 Sept., 1692, she was browbeaten and frightened into a confession of being a witch, but recanted 16 October. Nevertheless, she was indicted by the grand jury in January, 1693 (I. Mass. Hist. Coll., 7: 241), but was fortunately released after an imprisonment of four months.

"In 1658 he went to England and Ireland at the desire of his brother John, who wished him to come over with his family to act as a guide to John's wife and daughters. The documents which tell of the voyage, the capture by the Spaniards, the going to Ireland, the return to New England, appear in the Probate papers of John's estate. The settling of this estate also shows the strong affection and sense of justice of the brothers and sisters, for they all wished John's estate given to Robert to recompense him for his losses caused by compliance with John's request." In Nov 1675 he was chosen Constable of Haverhill. He traded in land to a great extent. He had 11 children by Eliz. Fawne/Fane. "Robert Clement came from England in the early part of 1642, landing at Salisbury, came to Haverhill the following summer...with wife and four children ( John, Lydia, Robert, Sarah). Job came about 1640-41. Robert was first Deputy of town to the General Court, and until 1654 was associate Judge, co-commissioner, 'appointed and empowered by the General Court to give the oath of fidelity to the inhabitants of Haverhill.'" "He was a man of rare integrity and superior talent, as may readily be judged from the responsible stations he was repeatedly called to fill. He married Elizabeth Fawne on December 08, 1652 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, daughter of John Fawne and Elizabeth.

Robert Clement was granted six acres of land at Haverhill. In 1658 he went to England and Ireland with his wife and children to act as a guide for his brother, John's wife and children. They were captured by the Spaniards and held prisoner in Spain for some weeks. He was a cooper. In 1668 Robert was on a committee to supervise registration of deeds. His death occurred soon after Feb 24-1714, the date of a deed.
