About Robert August Frederick Crowther, SV/PROG
Many children were sent to South Africa as part of the Children's Friends Society. Some of these were not always children and other's mere babes either taken away from their parents or sent from children's homes and workhouses in England.
The Royal Victoria Asylum, Chiswick Mall, was run by the Children’s Friend Society where destitute girls and boys were trained to be Servants before being sent to the Colonies “to give these children the chance of a better life”. Robert was 14 when they left Portsmouth on the Henry on 10th January 1836 under Captain Bunney, arriving in Cape Town 22 March 1836.
He was apprenticed to Fred Duckett, Cape District, farmer as a farm servant ✔
