About Robert De Gernon
NOT the same person as Ranulf de Gernon, 4th Earl of Chester!
Some family trees label him as "Duke of Boulogne"--but there was no duchy of Boulogne. There were Counts of Boulogne, but there is no record of a Robert as Count of Boulogne during this period. Rather, Eustache I de Boulogne was Count. See http://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/NORTHERN%20FRANCE.htm#_Toc276540426.
There seems to be very little consistency as to how many sons he had and what their names were.

Duchess of Cleveland ("Battle Abbey Roll", 1889):
- William, died without heirs
- Robert, landholder in Essex 1086
- William, son of Robert, grandson of Robert, inherited after 1086.
- Alured, brother of WIlliam son of Robert, retained the name Gernon.

MedLands does not commit itself as to descent from Robert de Gernon, but insists there were two Williams, father and son, that Gilbert was the son of the second William, and that there were then two Richards, father and son - and the second, the Magna Carta surety, has no recorded offspring. Fitting in five generations from 1066-1215 is not too difficult, but six is pushing it a bit.
