About Robert Gaines
By documentation, this Robert Gaines was a son of Thomas Games (Gaines) who was reputed to have land on Lawnes Creek near the James River, Virginia. There are numerous recorded documents conerning Robert Gaines and his relationship with Daniel and James Gaines, as well as with the Catlett and Rowze families. They were all living in a close neighborhood near Brecknock Bay on the Rappahannock River, Virginia, and their descendants were found in several nearby counties.
Robert Gaines first appeared in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia, in 1665, when he wa given a patent of 186 acres for transferring persons. The last document containing this Robert Gaines was dated 1711, Essex County, Virginia, and leads us to establish his death near that time. To date there is no document that establishes his wife and children. Evidence, however, points to at least three brothers who were the sons of Robert: namely,Robert, Henry and Richard of Middlesex County, Virginia.
