Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gilman-110

Robert Gilman was born about 1581 (assumes he was age 30 at first marriage), and died between 26 December 1658 (date of will) and 21 January 1658[/9] (will proved). He was the son of "Edward Gylmmynne of Hingham" (Gillman-3) according to a record memorializing his first marriage.[1]

He married (1) Hingham, 14 May 1611, Rose Hawes,[2][3] and (2) Mary ____, the widow Mary Bruen.[4]

Robert Gillman of Hingham, beer-brewer, made his will on 27 September 1658; proved at London by his widow, Mary, 21 January 1658/9. [5] See transcript here. < link >

The will mentioned (amongst others):

  • a son Samuel
  • a son Daniel and his unnamed children under 21
  • a married daughter Bayers, previously married to Thomas Becloe deceased, and the children of that marriage
  • four unmarried daughters Mary, Sara (or Sarah), Anne and Lidia
  • grandchild Edward Gilman living with the testator
  • She long survived as his widow. Mary was living in Harling when she made her will in 1680.[6][7]

Not the son of Robert. According to Walter Goodwin Davis, the records about his marriage proves this Robert was the "'son of Edward Gylmmynne of Hingham.'" See The ancestry of Abel Lunt ..." p. 157, Hathi Trust. This detail does not appear in the Hingham parish register entry; it must be in a related entry.

A prior version of this profile reported he was the son of Robert. citing "A. W. Gilman, Searches into the history of the Gillman or Gilman family ... p.146-- one of the works noticed below to have included a false lineage.

Yes, two daughters, Mary. It would seem Robert Gilman had two daughters named Mary, one by each of his two marriages.

Errors in Print. An early false Gilman lineage was published in 1869 by Arthur Gilman, The Gilman Family … in England and America (Albany, N.Y. : J. Munsell, 1869, rpt 1969); catalog entry, Hathi Trust.

Albeit including valuable additions, a second confused lineage was published in 1895 by Alexander Gilman, Searches into the History of the Gillman or Gilman Family … (London, E. Stock, 1895), 141 (Gilmans of Norfolk); digital images, Hathi Trust.
