About Robert I Malet, seigneur de Graville, Baron of Eye
Robert I Malet of Eye was born before 1051 in Normandy. He succeeded his father in Normandy circa 1071. He succeeded his father to a large English fief centered upon Eye circa 1071 in Suffolk.
Robert received the king's permission to found a cell of the abbey of Bernay at Eye before 1087 in Suffolk.
He departed England, at which Eye was controlled by Roger Pictaviensis, in 1087. He was back in England in possession of Eye in 1100.
He probably did not begin construction of the abbey at Eye until the early years of King Henry's reign, circa 1101. He was royal Chamberlain circa 1101.
Robert died after 1107 at Bec-de-Mortagne?, Seine-Maritime, Normandy. He may have died as a monk of Bec. He appeared in the records for the last time when he left England for Normandy with the king between August 1107 and September 1107.
