About Robert II de Sablé

"Robert II de Sablé le Bourguignon (nickname also borne by his father), lord of Sablé , son of Robert de Nevers lord of Craon and Avoise de Sablé, daughter of Geoffroy . It is also found referred to as Vestrol , or Vestroilt 1 .
Biography
Robert , youngest son of Robert le Bourguignon , is improperly named Robert I by Gilles Ménage , since his father was certainly the strain of the house of Sablé.
Robert II does not appear officially in the acts until his father's lifetime, confirming around 1080 the gift of a serf to Marmoutier , made by the Burgundian; witness in 1095 of the sentence of Foulque le Réchin attributing the vineyard of Pitrate to Saint-Aubin . Robert le Bourguignon seems to have taken pleasure in introducing him to government in several circumstances, for example theJanuary 14 , 1095when he had him settle all the previous difficulties between Marmoutier and la Couture , even if it meant approving the act himself the next day, a ceremony which he repeated several times. One day ( 1085 - 1096 ), he urged him to reconsider his demands on the Abbey of Saint Vincent , to be satisfied with the modest presents offered to him, and to constantly defend the monks' property.
When Robert le Bourguignon was preparing to leave for the crusade, Vestrol ratified his donations made to Sablé; but at Marmoutier, where the father confirmed his previous gifts for which Renaud, the eldest son, had received an indemnity, the youngest did not have to receive anything. He did not seem very delicate in certain circumstances with the monks who did not dare to accept a concession of custom in Saint-Nicolas de Sablé, seeing the bad grace with which the young man accepted the alms of the father; but the latter still wanted the matter to be settled when he left. He also agreed in this case, out of condescension for this son, to leave him after the death of Berthe, his second wife, the three hovels of land in La Lande. Almost immediately after the departure of his father, Robert II ,Orderic Vital , came with Viscount Raoul, Geoffroy II of Mayenne and other Le Mans knights, to submit his submission to Guillaume le Roux who had seized Le Mans , and hand over his fortress to the winner. He is named the third.
It appears in 1099 , witness of Gaudin de Malicorne , against the abbey of Saint-Aubin , as well as in Marmoutier with Simon de Bouère and Mathieu, brother-in-law of the latter, to ratify all the donations made in their fiefs by their parents. But it is of the old crusader that it is a question in a charter of Saint-Laud , of theApril 13 , 1099, where the same Gaudin de Malicorne promises to summon the lord of Sablé to the court of Foulque le Réchin , at Baugé .
The charter where Robert II is quoted retrospectively with his wife and Lisiard, his son, also makes known his grandsons, Robert and Geoffroy, and must date from 1140 . Ménage is right to say that Robert II , who is not mentioned after 1099 , went himself to the Holy Land , perhaps in search of his father, and that he did not return. He died young, says the same author, which explains why he was never seen doing anything, neither in Anjou nor in Maine . “ There was no war, no buildings, no foundation ”. Ménard , who says he only left in 1105, is obviously mistaken since he adds that he was Lord of Briolay , a Lordship which only entered the family through the marriage of Lisiard, his son."
