III by Gary Boyd Roberts, 1984 Suggests that Robert is probably a relative of Thomas Jones (b. 1602) , a tailor from Caversham, County Oxford, ENG, who came w/ wife Ann and 4 children in 1638 to Marlborough. "Genealogy of Jones, Hathaway, Richards, Gooding" by Melvin E. Jones, ME, 1934 gives basic family information. (copied to hard file) "History of the Town of Hingham, MA" Vol. 2, 1893 p. 386. Jones (Joanes) Robert Jones, one of the early planters of Hingham, is the ancestor of nearly all the families who have borne the surname Jones in this town. Richard and Thomas Jones received grants of land here in 1637 and 163 8, but neither of these appear to have been residents of the town [at the time]. p.386, History of the Town of Hingham, Massachusetts, Vol 2, pub. 1893 At the time the new meeting-house was built in Hingham, 1680-1681, there were but three persons of the surname Jones upon the tax lists, VIZ" Robert, Joseph Sr. and Joseph Jr. (father, son and grandson.)... Robert Jones, according to the Genealogical Dictionary prepared by Mr . Savage, removed from here to Rehoboth ab. 1644, but soon returned again to Hingham. He probably married twice, but the name of his first wives is unknown to the writer. The christian name of his second wife was Elizabeth [possibly Alexander]. She outlived him and died in Hingham 25 Sept. 1712. He died 17 Nov. 1691. In his will dated at Hingham 20 April 1688, he give various small sums in shillings and pence "to sons Joseph, John and Benjamin the elder, also to daughters Sarah Belknap & Jane Collyer (Collier), and to my grandchildren which are the children of my son Robert Jones, deceased." Marriage verified in IGI; Batch A456252, Serial sheet 0092 "2nd Supplement to Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700" by Melinda Lutz Sanborn p. 37 Suggests Robert had 3 wives. m. 1st wife Margaret Garnford 4-30-162 1 in Caversham, Oxfordshire, ENG.
