About Robert Lawrence of Ashton Hall
Sir Robert Lawrence, of Lancashire, England, born about 1150, attended Richard Coeur de Lion on the Crusade in the Holy Land and so greatly distinguished himself at the siege of Acre, that he was knighted by King Richard as "Sir Robert Lawrence of Ashton Hall," and granted in 1191, his arms: Argent, a cross raguly gules.

There seems to be a lot of confusion as to just which Robert Lawrence, father or son, went on Crusade with Richard the Lionheart. Crusading was, in general, a young man's game, but some older men did participate in this one. One or the other distinguished himself so well that he was knighted and rewarded with the manor of Ashton (not to be confused with the later Ashton Hall) in Lancashire.
