About Robert Malcolm

ROBERT MALCOLM (1764-1813)

John Malcolm says this of him (20 November 1998): "For Robert a writership in the East India Company was secured. He arrived at Madras aged 17, and progressed steadily in the ranks of the EIC. In 1796 he became commercial resident at Masilupatam, where he would have done well financially. What in the West would have been called corrupt - the old 'Indian' practice of senior officials exacting commissions and levies for granting favours, had been abolished in the Presidency cities in the 1780's but in 'outstations' like Masilupatam persisted for another couple of decades. Robert married an Indian lady and had two 'natural' daughters, one of whom later married a prominent British Bombay merchant called Leckie. These daughters never came to Britain, but were provided for and were quite openly acknowledged and accepted by the family in Scotland. This would have been in strong contrast to the attitude taken after about 1830, when such liasons were not only disapproved of , but information of them supressed. However, Robert became ill about 1806 (from what is not known, but it was rumoured to be the bottle), and came home to Burnfoot, where he died in 1813".
