ROBERT MONTGOMERY OF GIFFEN

Robert Montgomery of Giffen is the second son of Sir John Motgomery of Ardrossan. The Scots Peerage III: 430-31 His father gave him the lands of Giffen and others in the Kyle-Stewart division of Ayrshire, and the lands of Lochhouse in Linlithgowshire. Memorials I: p. 22 A lithograph copy of the Duke of Albany's charter of confirmation in his favour dated 9 March 1413 was included in volume two of Memorials. Memorials II: p. 21

Death

A date and place of death has not been identified for Robert Montgomery of Giffen. However, his successor, Sir William Montgomery of Giffen, is mentioned in a charter from 1465, and it seems quite likely, therefore, probable even, that he died before this date. RMS II: charter number 850 on p. 180

9 March 1413: Charter by which the Regent Albany confirms the grants made by Sir John Montgomery of Ardrossan to his son Robert Montgomery. The lands conveyed were Giggen, Knockintire, and Knockmuline in the Kyle-Stewart division of Atrshire, and Lochhouse in Linlithgowshire. Memorials II: p. 21

1465: Charter by which Alexander, Lord Montgomery, confirms that he has given the lands of Lochhouse in Linlithgowshire to Michael Hamilton, son of the deceased Thomas Hamilton of Torrance. Lochhouse had previously been held by Sir William Montgomery of Giffen. RMS II: charter number 850 on p. 180
