DEATH OF MR RA MUNRO

Caledonian Pipe Major

Pipe-Major, Robert Angus Munro, died in a Springs nursing home on Saturday Morning.

Mr Munro attended the Caledonia ball at Nigel on Friday evening with the Springs Pipe Band, to which he was attached. A few hours after returning to Springs he became ill and died.

He was about 50 years of age, and came from Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire, Scotland. He served through the Great War in the Cameron Highlanders, and 12 years ago he came to Johannesburg and stated business as a tailor and clothier with his brother. A few months ago he opened a business in Springs.

POPULAR FIGURE

Mr Munro was a popular figure on the Rand in his position as Pipe-Major of the Johannesburg Caledonian Pipe Band, which he occupied for seven years. During the late Mr William Lowe’s period in office as Chief of the Federated Caledonian Society of South Africa, Mr Munro was his official piper and toured the country with Mr Lowe.

When the Prince of Wales composed a march tune for the bagpipes a few months ago, Mr Munro was the first piper in South Africa to play it in public. He was also a champion Highland dancer and a fluent speaker of the Gaelic language. Mr Munro is survived by his wife and one son, who recently left school.

At a reception held by the Springs Caledonian Society on Saturday in the Town Hall Supper Room, references were made to Mr Munro and a votes of condolence with the relatives was passed.

The funeral took place in Johannesburg yesterday afternoon, and was attended by representative from all the Caledonian Societies on the Reef.
