About Robert Plumb, I, Yeoman
Robert Plumbe, or Plume, of Great Yeldham, Essex County, England, was born about 1530 and buried May 18, 1613. He married for his first wife Elizabeth Purcas, about 1555. She was buried June 25, 1596. For his second wife he married Mrs. Ethelred Fuller, about 1600. She was buried May, 1615. He had eight children by his first wife, of whom Robert, the eldest son and second child, is our lineal ancestor, and one child by his second wife. These children were all born in Great Yeldham except the two elder, and they were probably born there before the commencement of the parish registers, the earliest of which were not instituted until 1522. His children are all named in the Visitation in 1634, except those who died in infancy. This Robert owned much land in Great Yeldham, Little Yeldham, Toppesfield, Waller, Belchamp, Bulmer, Castle Hedingham, Heding- ham Sible, and Halstead in Essex, and in Clare and other parishes in Suffolk. He gave Spaynes and Butlers manors and considerable other land to his eldest son, Robert ; Yeldham manor he gave to his son Thomas, and Hawkdon Hall in Suffolk, to his son Edmund. Robert's great-granddaughter, Dorcas, married John Lyman, whose daughter Mary married Hon. John Hall.

The Plumes were, apparently, wealthy as
The Plumes were, apparently, wealthy as Robert purchased the estate of Edward DeVere, the 7th Earl of Oxford. His occupation is listed as Gentleman. He was born during the reign of King Henry the VIII and lived through that of Bloody Mary and her Protestant sister, Queen Elizabeth the I. He would have seen Scottish James Stuart I ascend the throne. The entry in the burial register in Great Yeldham is in large, bold script, suggesting that Robert was a man of importance in the parish. He owned extensive lands in Essex and Suffolk, including the manors of Yeldham Hall and Spaynes Hall in Great Yeldham, which he bequeathes to his sons, and The Poole, inherited by his daughter Elizabeth. He owned much land in Great Yelden, Little Yeldham, Toppersfield, Walter Belcamp, Bulmer, Castle Hendlingham Sible & Halsted in Essex and in Suffolk parishes. He gave Spaynes and Butlers manors to his eldest son Robert; Yeldham manor to his son Thomas, and Hawkdon Hall in Suffolk to his son Edmond. He was classed as a gentleman and had a coat of arms. A codicil was added to his will May 17, 1613. He will was proved June 22, 1613, Great Yeldham, co., Essex, England. SOURCE: Genealogies and Biographies of Ancient Wethersfield
