Robert Powrie (Pourie), b. 5 May 1784, in Inchture, Perth. He was a shoemaker in Errol, Perthshire.
At the age of 19 he enlisted in the Royal Artillery on 25 Nov 1803. He was a NCO in His Majesty's Royal Artillery involved in taking the Cape under Sir David Baird. He married Esther on 27th August 1816 in St. George's Cathedral, Cape Town. He was a Private for 6 years and 143 days, a Corporal for 8 years and 345 days, a total of 15 years, 123 days. The reason for discharge was reduction and he was admitted to the pension list at 11 pence per day from 1 Feb 1819, at the age of 34 and 4/12 years of age when discharged. He was 6 foot tall, with dark brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion.
After his discharge he sailed back to South Africa on the the Naval Ship Cumbria (Cumbrian) as an emigrant on with Ester Deacon his wife, a midwife and two small daughters.
