About Robert Richardson

FINDING ROBERT Without any clues and dozens of Robert Richardsons on the loose in Victoria, I was unable to find him anywhere. Then Ancestry DNA came to the rescue with a match to rlcorbett1which says I am 5th to 8th cousin, and the Robert (marriage below) is the only connection. I could never have guessed he might be James Robert and Eliza's son. Then I found another family tree on Ancestry from Garry Richardson, who is also related to Robert through his son Alfred and has some precious family evidence to identify family members. Much of what follows is from Garry's family archive (see documents) and his own research, added to the family tree of rlcorbett1, with some of my own research done while trying to sort out who was what and where. The photographs are also Garry's. Sandra Hayes has since provided a suite of Westons related to Robert's wife. [Robert was NOT born at the present Donnybrook near Kalkallo, but at Donnybrook on the Bellarine Peninsula near Connewarre, abt. 8 miles from Geelong]

BIRTH & BAPTISM Robert's birth has possibly not been registered. If, as I believe, James Robert and Eliza arrived in Geelong in 1846, Robert might have been born in a very unsettled time for the family, and in a place remote from registrars and other officialdom. Given Eliza's history, she might have coped very badly with another baby born in the midst of turmoil and change. An estimate of Robert's age can be derived from his death cert (see docs) which shows him as 51yrs in January 1900. So far I have been unable to find other evidence except other family trees which provide ages with no evidence. Robert's death certificate misnames his mother as Elizabeth Hutcherson, so either he had forgotten her name, or the person reporting his death got it wrong. See below. Robert's previous brother, James, died January 1846, before the family left Tasmania, and his next was born 1850. It seems unlikely that Robert would be born as late as 1849, so close to the next birth. Much more likely he was the first birth in Donnybrook or Connewarre, with possibly a miscarriage or another unregistered infant that died young before 1850. Eliza Richardson was admitted to Yarra Bend Asylum in 1848, and might well be Robert's mother, although there are many Irish Richardsons in asylums from C1840 to C1900, so not sure how confident this attribution might be. The gap in this families childbirths is suggestive, and her mental illness seems directly linked to pregnancy and childbirth - probably post natal depression with psychotic features such as suicidality.

MARRIAGE This man is connected to us via DNA. Further evidence shows this is a correct attribution. First name(s) Robert Last name Richardson Sex Male Marriage year 1886 Spouse's first name(s) Emma Spouse's last name Weston State Victoria Country Australia Record set Victoria Marriages 1836-1942 Registration number 3607

THE EVIDENCE FOR THE RELATIONSHIP 1. DNA links us to Robert Richardson who married Emma Weston via rlcorbett1 family tree because rlcorbett has done a DNA test with Ancestry. 2. Garry Richardson's family tree provides a lot of evidence for the marriage, their children, and grandchildren across NSW and Victoria. 3. Vercoe Weakly family tree provides corroboration and new information. 4. Each family tree knows more about the line of its own descent and relies on family stories and knowledge. They were long lived people and the tree makers could/would have been able to talk to people with living memories. Sandra Hayes has extensive work for Robert's wife, Emma. 6. Much of the detail has evidence that I can confirm, although I have drawn the line at collecting all those birth and death certificates.

I believe this is strong enough and consistent to add Robert and Emma and their children to the tree as descendants of James Robert. He moved around a bit, making him difficult to track with such a commonly used name, so these family trees with direct family knowledge are very helpful. Without the DNA connection I would never have looked at Robert and Emma as our family.

THE MISSING YEARS

If Robert was reading the newspapers at his place on the diggings, or nearby, he would have heard of the death of his father in 1881 since it was so sensational it was widely published.

Robert was close to 40 yrs when he married in 1886. Oh, for an insight into whether he was mining or farm working in those missing years. Since he came from a long line of farmers and went on to farm in NSW, perhaps he was feeding the goldfields rather than working them. There is a Robert Richardson, farmer, near Ballarat in 1880 - possible? More research needed.

Occupier Name: Robert Richardson Residence Date: 6 Sep 1888 Residence Place: Creswick, Victoria, Australia Owner Name: R Bros Robert Richardson, grazier, was a tenant of Richardson Bros on 60 acres at Spring Hill in the Shre of Creswick nr. Ballarat. [Not our man as his brothers were John & Thomas]

TO NSW In 1891, Robert moves to New South Wales. It seems most probable that he went to the Bendigo gold fields, where he married Emma, after leaving Connewarre/Donnybrook, and before leaving Victoria.

Dubbo Dispatch and Wellington Independent 24 May 1895 WARREN LAND COURT. The above Court sat on Wednesday and Thursday last, presided over by Messrs W. C. Cardew (Chairman), E. H. Kator and J, Reddan. The following cases (says the "Herald ") were dealt with Inquiry under Sec. 36, C.L. Act of 1884 Robert Richardson, Narromine; oertificate to issue.

DEATH & BURIAL First name(s) Robert Last name Richardson Age 51 [He was possibly 53yrs] Sex Male Birth year 1849 Death year 1900 Father's name Richardson James Mother's name Elizabeth Hutcherson [Correct transcript, but the informant was mistaken. Should be Eliza McVay] Death place Bendigo Hosp State Victoria Registration number 577 Bendigo Advertiser 18 Jan 1900 THE Friends of the late MR. ROBERT RICHARDSON are respectfully invited to follow his Remains from the Bendigo Hospital to the Bendigo Cemetery. Funeral to move at four o'clock, this day. THOMAS SAYER. Undertaker. Bridge-street.

Robert is buried at Section Mon C6, Grave No. 15826. Robert Vere who was buried 17th March, is in the same grave, interment no. 15894.

Robert's death certificate describes him as a grazier, 51 years old who dies of pneumonia and heart disease. He has lived 9 years in NSW and 42 years in Victoria (which would confirm an 1849 birth date). So much of these details depends on an informant who was not present in Robert's early life, and is susceptible to misremembering eg the mistake re Eliza's name. Did the registrar just make everything add up to 51yr age? Certainly Emma would have known when they moved to NSW, but Robert's circumstances before he met her are liable to error. James Robert is named as James Richardson, a market gardener, which is correct, Elizabeth Hutcherson as his mother is incorrect, and so might be his age.

[Given the coincidence of Robert and son Robert Vere both dying in high Summer 1900 at Marong near Bendigo, I wondered if they had a contagious disease, but no, Robert died of pneumonia & heart disease so probably not a well man (congestive heart failure?). Since Robert died without a will, it seems to have been an unexpected death. The family was at Marong for several months in 1900, probably visiting Emma's family for Christmas]

Gary has added Robert's death certificate in docs.

I have found Robert's probate register. See docs It says:- 21348 Richardson Robert of Nevertire Grazier 21st September 1900 By Act of Court Administration granted to Emma Richardson "Pine Grove" near Nevertire The widow of the said deceased BOND in amount of L2,400 SECURITIES(?)
