A STRANGE CASE The Macon (Mo.) correspondent of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat says: The bodies of Dr. Sherman and Samuel Parker arrived there Saturday night about 11 o'clock. The mystery surrounding their sudden taking off has not been penetrated, and the case is one of the strangest in the annals of the country. The facts in the tragedy are as follows: Dr. B.F. Sherman, proprietor of the "Sherman Prickly Ash Bitters" and other medicinal preparations, having business at Bevier, urged Mr. Parker to accompany him to that village. They left this city in a buggy about 11 o'clock and arrived at their destination shortly after noon. After ordering their dinner, it was proposed that they should go and take a drink. Bevier being a temperance town, minus any licensed dram-shops, the Sullivan Democrat: Wednesday, November 3, 1875 On the inside of this issue will be found an account of the mysterious death of Dr. Sherman in Missouri. Dr. S. will be remembered by many of our old citizens as a son of Uncle Robert Sherman, who lived some twenty years ago on the Southside, about where Crowder & Reed's drug store is now. unfortunate gentlemen proceeded to the drug store of A. W. Shanks and made the object of their visit known to the proprietor, who was the only one present. That gentleman is said to have replied that he sold no whisky, but that he had A PRIVATE TEMPERANCE DRINK, which he indulged in himself, and if they wanted some of that they could have it. All three went into a back room, where Mr. Shanks produced a black ale bottle, from which he drank and then handed it to the others. While Parker and Sherman were drinking, Mr. Shanks left for the front store to attend upon a customer. Before he was through with the caller, Dr. Sherman and Mr. Parker passed out, but had not gone ten rods before both fell down and expired a few minutes afterwards. They were carried into the drug store and every means used to restore consciousness, but without avail. A jury was impaneled as quickly as practicable, and while the inquest was being held it was ascertained that the bottle from which the trio had imbibed was missing. It could not be found for some time, but was finally discovered in a room in the rear of the one in which the drinks were taken, and was identified by Mr. Shanks. The contents were analyzed [by]Drs. Shaw and Jackson, of Macon and it was found to consist of hydrocyanic acid and whisky, the deadly poison being such proportion that sixty drops of the compound was sufficient to produce death. At the conclusion of the investigation the FOLLOWING VERDICT WAS RENDERED We, the jury, after viewing the bodies and hearing the evidence, find that the deceased gentlemen came to their death by drinking from a bottle furnished them by A. W. Shanks." After the inquest had terminated, the bodies were place in a wagon and brought to this city, arriving here about 11 o'clock. They were laid side by side upon a double lounge, and hundreds of citizens called to view the sad spectacle. Weeping friends stood around and mourned the sudden departure of those who had so recently left them in perfect health. The calamity has fallen upon [the]community like a deadly pall. Without further investigation, not even a post-mortem examination being held, the remains of Dr. Sherman were to-day forwarded to Chillicothe for burial, and those of Samuel Parker were interred in Oakwood cemetery. The latter gentleman was well known throughout this section of country, respected on all sides, and highly connected. Dr. Sherman had a wide spread reputation throughout the state. GREAT EXCITEMENT prevails in the city at the unsatisfactory termination of the official investigation, and much indignation is expressed at its not being more thorough. No post-mortem examination being held, is severely commented on. Five or six sudden deaths have occurred in the country within the last six months.
