Son of Samuel Steele (d. 1760, Chester, PA) and Anne Futhey (d. 1790, Chester, PA). Married Jane Chambers in about 1762 in Rowan, NC. Jane was born Feb. 14, 1744, in Lancaster, PA, and died about 1825 in Cape Girardeau County, MO.

Some claim that Robert is Samuel's brother's son, i.e., son of Ninian Steele and Mary Futhey. However, in Newton Chambers Steele's book "Captain Ninian Steele and His Descendants", 1901, he states "It is not known what Ninian Steele's father's given name was, but I think from the evidence I have found that it was Samuel and that he (Ninian) had two brothers in North Carolina named Samuel and Robert..."

Robert was quite possibly the first Steele in his lineage born in America. He was arguably the son of Samuel and Anne Futhey Steele. By some accounts, he was killed in the Revolutionary War (1775-1783).

Robert came to the Yadkin Valley from Chester, PA. He was a schoolmaster. His land grant was between the Third Creek and Fourth Creek in their upper reaches away from the South Yadkin River.

Robert's stone is the second to the right from his brother Ninian's stone and just to the right of a single stone marking the graves of two of Ninian's children, Samuel and Robert.

Inscription: Here lies the body of Robert Steel (sic) who died August 12, 1781, aged 53 years.
