Robert West

STEUBEN – Robert L. West passed away peacefully June 14, 2011, surrounded by his family in Ellsworth. Robert was born Dec. 19, 1940, to Leah and Emery West of Steuben.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1963. Upon his return to Steuben, he built a lobster boat and fished for five years, then purchased a lobster pound on Pigeon Hill Bay, which he owned and operated from 1969 to 2003. When he left the lobster business, he then owned and operated a small construction company, continuing to work until ill health forced him to retire a second time. Robert was a very hard worker. He enjoyed working on his property, clearing and preparing lots for sale.

Robert was married for 50 years to Carolyn M. West, who survives him, along with sons, Blair and wife, Susan, Robert E., and Christian with wife, Jodi; two grandchildren, Ashley and Brittany; two brothers, Richard of Florida and Clifford and wife, Anne, of Steuben; six sisters, Thelma, Francis, Carmen, Elizabeth, Evelyn, and Judy and husband, Steve; several cousins, and nieces and nephews. Robert will be missed by many. He was a generous man, who was always there and ready to help anyone who needed a hand. He will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends, including his spiritual family of brothers and sisters at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at Kingdom Hall, Steuben. A celebration of his life will be held noon-3 p.m. Saturday at The Pines
