Robert was the son of Wellington and Telatha Lowry Wilkins. He married Peggy Locklear on Apr. 8, 1916 in the Burnt Swamp section of Robeson County, North Carolina.

He was shot through his left lung and died a few days later from pneumonia according to his NC death certificate and THE ROBESONIAN article from Dec. 28, 1922 edition recounting his death.
