Robert fitz Roger, 1st Lord Clavering was born circa 1247 at Clavering, Essex, England.4 He was the son of Roger fitz John, 4th Lord Warkworth and Isabel (?).2 Robert fitz Roger, 1st Lord Clavering was in infancy at his father's death in 1249.2 He was committed to the care of William de Valence, the half-brother of the king, Edward I, although his grandmother, Ada de Baliol, offered 2,200 marks for the wardship, between 1249 and 1268.2 Baron of Horsford at Norfolk between 1249 and 29 April 1311.2 He married Margery la Zouche, daughter of Alan, Lord Zouche, of Ashby and Helen de Quincy, circa 1265.4 1st Lord FitzRoger of Clavering at Essex, England, between 1295 and 1310.5,6 Robert fitz Roger, 1st Lord Clavering was a witness where Edward I "Longshanks", King of England called a Parliament and summoned his Barons on 23 June 1295.6 Robert was summoned to parliament by Edward I "Longshanks", King of England on 23 June 1295 as Lord Clavering.6 Robert fitz Roger, 1st Lord Clavering attended Parliament as Baron FitzRoger between 2 November 1295 and 16 June 1311.2 The forces of Edward I defeat a Scottish army under William Wallace. On 22 July 1298 at the Battle of Falkirk, Scotland.7 Arms: Quarterly: or and gules, a bend sable.8 He took part in the Battle of Falkirk where the English defeated the Scots on 22 July 1298.8 He died on 29 April 1311.2

This feudal lord became eventually so eminent in the Scottish wars of King Edward I, particularly in the battle of Falkirk, and other memorable conflicts, that he was summoned as "Robert Fitz-Roger" to parliament as a Baron, from 2 November, 1295, to 16 June (4th Edward II), 1311, and subsequently assisted with his son, John, who assumed, by the king's appointment, the surname of Clavering, at the celebrated siege of Caerlaverock. His lordship m. Margaret de la Zouche, and had issue, seven son, viz., John, his successor; Edmund, Alexander, Robert, Henry, Roger, all d. s. p.; Alan (Sir), m. Isabella, eldest dau. and co-heir of William Riddell, and from this union descended the Claverings of Callaly, in Northumberland, the Baronets Clavering of Axwell, co. Durham, the Claverings of Learchild, the Claverings of Tilmouth, co. Durham, &c. He d. about the year 1311, and was s. by his eldest son, John de Clavering.
