About Robert de Gatton

Robert De Gatton, 1147 - 1190. Son of Hamo de Gatton (born: 1125, Gatton, died: 1165).

“In the reign of king Henry III. Robert de Gatton, who took his name from the lordship of Gatton, in Surry [sic], of which his ancestors had been some time owners, was in possession of the manor Thrule, and died in the 38th year of that reign, holding it by knight's service of the king, of the honor of Peverel, by reason of the escheat of that honor, &c. (fn. 2)”

A sister of Robert De Gatton was Sybella de Gatton, who married Ralph de Dene and had the following children: · Robert de Dene; Luke De Dene; Amfridus De Dene; Katherine De Denne; Ella de Dene and Idonea De Dene.

The eldest son of Robert De Gatton. Hamo de Gatton, succeeded his father in his knights service of the king and the lordship of Gatton. Homo De Gatton resided at the manor Thule, and served the office of sheriff in the 14th year of Edward I. He had a son, Homo De Gatton, who had three children. One of them also married a De Denne, as follows:

Elizabeth Denne (de Gatton) MARRIED WILLIAM DE DENE, and entitled her husband William de Dene to the s manor Gatton, the manor Thrule and all the rest of the estates in Kent, which SHE INHERITED FROM HER FATHER Hamo De Gatton, son of Hamo De Gatton. She had a sister Margery and a brother Edmund who died under age. Her sister Margery De Gatton entitled her husband Simon de Norwood to Gatton, in Surry and all the other estates in Surry. By this marriage, in the 20th century, the marriage of Louise Wadhams Blakeslee and John Paul Dean reunited the Dean (De Denne) and the De Gatton families once again. Following tradition, ironically, the family names common to both lines reemerge in their two sons, John Dean and Ralph Dean. LDC
