Biography

Roger Deyncourt (Roger V) was the son of John Deyncourt.[1][2][3] The identity of his mother is unknown.[2] At the post mortem inquisition for his father, John Deyncourt, held on July 20, 1322, Roger was "36 or more,"[1] which means that he was born about 1286.

Roger was the last direct male descendant of Roger Deyncourt I to hold Morton. Roger held lands in Morton, Knapthorpe, Hasland, Gildeforde and Duckmanton. He was an important member of the Derbyshire gentry and held many important offices, including serving as a commissioner of array in 1325 and 1335, an assessor and collector of taxes in 1327-28, 1337, 1339 and 1340-42, a commissioner of oyer and terminer in 1337, 1340, 1347, 1349 and 1350, sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in 1334, and escheator for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire in 1334.[2]

Roger married Matilda (Maud), daughter of Ralph Bugge.[2][3] A Fine dated 1325 refers to Roger and Maud, his wife, which indicates that they were married sometime before that date.[4] Ralph Bugge held lands in Duckmanton and various transfers of land in Duckmanton to Roger in 1334-1341 probably reflect part of their marriage settlement.[2]
Robert and Maud had the following children (and perhaps others):

  • Alice, b. about 1334, m. September 29, 1346 Nicholas Longford II, d. after 1385
  • Joan, m. Robert Neville of Scotter, Lincolnshire[2][3]

Robert probably died sometime in 1351. The last record of Robert in from January 1351, when he was discharged from the duties of levying and collecting taxes in Derbyshire because he was too old and ill.[2]
