Rolfe Eldridge

Rolfe Eldridge, Sr. was the son of Thomas Eldridge and Martha Bolling. He was born December 29, 1744 in Virginia. He married Susanna Everard Walker on November 25, 1773 in Brunswick County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Col. George Walker of Elizabeth City, Virginia. The Walkers moved to Brunswick County in 1768. Rolfe and Susanna had nine children, shown below. He died after 1806.

Rolfe Eldridge served as Clerk of Buckingham County, Virginia, 1770-1806. He served as a churchwarden for Tillotson Parish.

Many early records for Buckingham County were destroyed in a fire February, 1869. The County Courthouse, designed by Thomas Jefferson, held the court papers and other records of the prominent families of the county, including Rolfe Eldridge Sr. and Jr.

A 66-year old Rolfe Eldridge appears in the 1810 US census for Buckingham County, Virginia. The age and location is correct for our Rolfe, but these early census forms do not contain much identifying data.
