Thomas Eldridge II.(c.1713-1754) was the son of Thomas Eldridge, Sr. and Judith Kennon. He married his cousin Martha Bolling (1713-1749), daughter of Col. John Fairfax Bolling and wife Mary Kennon in Prince George Co., VA. Mary Kennon and Judith Kennon were sisters. Thomas and Martha had eight children, listed below. Thomas inherited his father's law books. It is likely that he also practiced law.

Martha Kennon was born in 1713 and died October 23, 1749. After Martha's death, Thomas married Elizabeth Jones, daughter of James Jones and Sarah Howell. Three children are attributed to this second marriage, listed below. These children are not as well-documented as the children of the first marriage. Much of the information is speculative as of this writing. They were all born after 1749 (Martha's death) and before mid-1755 (Thomas died in late 1754). Thomas died in Sussex County, Virginia, on December 4, 1754. After his death, second wife Elizabeth married Drury Stith of Brunswick, as his second wife.

What relation Samuel was to Thomas Eldridge, to whom the Eldridge family of Virginia can directly trace, does not appear. This is an entirely different Eldridge family in Virginia. SAMUEL ELDRIDGE was one of the several persons who came to Virginia with JUSTINIAN COOPER, a prominent ??migrant, who married ANNE HARRISON, the widow of a JAMES HARRISON, who had been ANNE OLIFFE. She and Justnian Cooper had no children, but there appears to have been children of Cooper by a first marriage. In taking out several patents to land from 1635/6 on for several years, JUSTINIAN COOPER repeatedly used the headright of this SAMUEL ELDRIDGE, every time he took out a patent. Eldridge had probably come to Virginia, when Justinian Cooper first came, so that he arrived very early. By 1750 a SAMUEL ELDRIDGE was patenting lands in ISLE OF WTCOUNTY in his own name. Also a certain ??UGH ELDRIDGE and a THOMAS ELDRIDGE came about the same time. See Nugent pp. 47, 65, 143, 197, 255, 309, and for THOMAS 381.

Other writers have claimed that the SAMUEL ELDRIDGE was the ancestor, but it may have been THOMAS as well. A THOMAS ELDRIDGE died nearly 100 years later (Nov. 4, 1740) in SURRY County, Virginia. He was a lawyer. __________ Jerry,

(1) "Samuel Eldredge, the immigrant ancestor of this branch of the family, was a resident of Medford, Massachusetts, before 1651. In 1652 he deposed before the Court that he was 32 years old. In 1646 he was a resident of Cambridge, and in 1659 in Rumney Marsh, later Chelsea. He removed to Kingston, Rhode Island, in 1668 and was of Wickford, over which Connecticut claimed jurisdiction. He served as constable there and was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artilliery Company of Boston. October 8, 1674 he was granted by the general court at Hartford "the sum of twenty nobles for good service in doing and suffering for this colony." On december 18, 1675, he was at Richard Smith's garrison house just before the Narragansett swamp fight, as related by Captain Benjamin Church, who says they went on a night adventure with him, surprising and capturing eighteen Indians. In 1697 he deeded to his son John a house and a hundred acres of land with a right on the other side of then the Pequot Path. He died about 1697. He married Elizabeth ---------. The Reverend Samuel Watson, born August 10, 1813 in Worchester County,Maryland, son of Levin and Susannah Watson of Accomac County, Virginia married in Desoto County, Mississippi, December 15, 1842, Mary Alline Dupree, born February 23, 1827 (daughter of Allen Dupree, b. 1796, and his wife Priscilla Elizabeth Stuart b. Aug. 25, 1800, d. Nov. 20, 1853, m. Aug. 27, 1822).

Samuel and Mary Dupree Watson had thirteen children, including Ella Love Watson, born December 29, 1851 in Desoto, Mississippi, died February 18, 1880 in Woodruff County, Arkansas; she married March 25, 1869 Rolfe Eldridge, Jr.

The first record of an Eldridge in America is the will of John Eldridge of the manor of Chillwood, Somerset, England, dated September 11, 1646, in which he mentions his "said brother beyond the seas and in his minority". (Meade: Families of Virginia, vol. i, p. 70.) John Eldridge was the younger son of Richard Eldridge, a bell founder of Surrey County, England.

Thomas Eldridge, a lawyer, grandson of John Eldridge and great-grandson of Richard the bell founder, was born ca 1670 and died November 4, 1740 in Surry County, Virginia. He married Judith Kennon, born ca 1692, died October 14, 1759, the daughter of Richard Kennon (b. 1650 in England, died 1696 in Virginia) and his wife Elizabeth Worsham, born ca 1656, the daughter of William Worsham and his wife Elizabeth Littleberry.

In 1711 Thomas Eldridge received by deed from his brother-in-law Colonel William Kennon one of Sir Thomas Dale's ancient settlements in Henrico County, known as Rochedale Hundred (now known as Jones' Neck), on the south side of the river, west of Curl's Neck which is on the north side. Thomas Eldridge was deputy clerk of Henrico County between May 17, 1716 and April 1, 1717. He died in Surry County on November 4, 1740, where his will dated August 17, 1739, was probated May 20, 1740. (William & Mary Quarterly XIV, p. 5.) In it he named his wife Judith, and children: Thomas, Judith, Elizabeth, Ann,Martha, William and Richard, and grand-children Thomas and Jane Eldridge.

Judith Eldridge died in Sussex County October 14, 1759, aged 67. Her will, dated March 2, 1754 and probated in Surry County February 15, 1760, named her daughter Sarah, son William, and grand-daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Judith, and Ann Sterling Clack.

Thomas Eldridge Jr., son of Thomas and Judith, was born 1710 in Virginia and died in Sussex County on December 4, 1754. He married (1) Martha Bolling in 1727. She was born in 1713, and died October 23, 1749, the daughter of Col. John Bolling. (Meade: op. cit., vol. i, p.79; also National Register, Colonial Dames of America #8277.) Thomas Eldridge married (2) Elizabeth Jones, daughter of James and Sarah (Howell) Jones of Surry County, Virginia.

Thomas Eldridge III was a son of his father's first marriage, born ca 1737 in Sussex County, died 1822 in Madison County, Alabama. He was a Revolutionary soldier.

It has been a long day, and I am weary from the plantation. We received word from England a few months ago, through Gov. George Yeardley about new policies for us here in Virginia. He called this set of order the "Great Charter," but we know it as "the Charter of Orders, Lawes and Priviledges. " He explained that Treasurer Thomas Smith and Assistant Treasurer Edwin Sandy drew up these new instructions. They are divided into two main sections and the first described a new land system for the colony. The second increased the London Companyís governance over the colony. We mind the second section little because the first is so much more important to us as stockholders in the company. I guess the company has not made the profits they were expecting. This is not surprising because conditions have been so hard here. They have to pay us our dividends somehow so theyíve decided to give us land. This will not only please us but it will encourage more Englishmen to come to Virginia. They gave us 100 acres and have promised 100 more is on the way. Can you believe they call us "ancient planters," those of us who came before 1616 and paid our own way? Theyíve also promised everyone who pays their own way, from now on, their very own 50 acres of land. We even get 50 acres if we pay for someone else to come to Jamestown. They call this the headright system. It sounds great for me because I can pay for servants to come, received 50 acres from the government and have the servants indentured for about 7 years. This will surely be enough labor for harvest next year. Besides giving us land they also allowed stockholders to join with non-stockholders and purchase the title for a particular plantation. Therefore myself, Thomas Smith and Thomas Berkeley all combined our resources and bought 80,000 acres along the river. This is much more land than each of us could have bought by ourselves. Now we run the property with no interference from the company, and Thomas Smith who doesnít have any stocks bought into the company. The charter also restructured the operation of Virginia. Now we are divided into four boroughs straddling the river. Each borough has 3,000 acres for the half-share tenants to run and 1,500 acres for officials. The governor also got 3,000 acres but unfortunately he receives no salary. All of these new orders have changed things here. We are running a plantation and receiving new indentured servants with every ship. It also seems like more people are coming from England. I guess they are coming for the land.

WILLIAM ROYAL OF COLONIAL SAMPSON COUNTY c1725-1795 by Jerome Tew Rebecca Royal is not in the 1818 will of Young Royal, apparently she died prior to 1818.

Raiford ROYAL [Parents] was born on 26 Jan 1800 in ,Samson,Nc. He married Nancy ODOM in 1825 in <,Samson,Nc>.

WILLIAM ROYAL OF COLONIAL SAMPSON COUNTY c1725-1795 by Jerome Tew Sons William (1786) and Raiford (1800) moved to Georgia. Son William died in Dooly Co. Georgia in 1845. Raiford returned to Sampson County near that time for a visit. his dad's estate had not been properly probated and Raiford was particularly annoyed at Travis Butler, who had married his sister Sarah. Raiford was married twice. His first wife died about 1835. His second wife Ellen was born in Ga. Raiford gave a power-of-attorney to his brother-in-law Eldridge Thornton to help resolve the issues. Apparently that did not hasten the resolution of Young Royal's estate as it was 50 years later before Young's will was probated. __________ http://www.royall.net/Reports/royalls.htm From T.C. "Raiford Royal, son of Young and Edith Royal of Sampson County, N.C., was born ca 1799 NC and died 1865 in Dooly County, Ga. According to a family legend (R.A. Hendricks family record):

'Raiford Royal came to Dooly County, Georgia, in 1815 or 1820. He asked his father in Tarboro, North Carolina, to have a pair of shoes made for him. Size 14. His father told him to roll up his pants and go barefoot and get his feet tough. This made Raiford angry and he did roll up his pants and rode his mule away and came to Georgia, Dooly County. He never wore shoes again.'

My research shows that Raiford's father lived in Sampson County, N.C., and died there before 1820. Raiford was not enumerated in Dooly County census until 1830.

He married first, Nancy Odom, and by 1840 census shows 1 male age 40/0, 1 female age 40/50, 2 mages age 10/15 (unidentified), 1 female age 10/15, 1 male age 5/10 and 1 female age under 5. "
