Ronnie (Snr) (49), his wife, Elizabeth Catharina Hunt (Elize) (48), and their son, Ronald Frederick Hunt (26), were all shot dead in the family home at Reitz in the Free State on 16th September 2002.
Police spokesperson Veronica Ntepe said their bodies were found in the dining room by the family's domestic worker, Emily Mofokeng, around 07h00 when she arrived at work. They all had gunshot wounds. Ronnie Snr sustained a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
The two surviving family members, were sons, Riaan and Elro (16) a technical high school student. Elro went missing in his fathers bakkie (pick-up truck) after the incident. He spent the weekend with friends, drinking and watching rugby. He had planned to commit suicide on the Monday.
Police patrolling the area saw the missing bakkie being driven on the road between Reitz and Tweeling. A firearm was thrown out of the window just before they stopped the vehicle. The 6,35mm gun was registered in the name of Elizabeth Hunt. Elro was arrested.
"Dr Janus Pretorius, a psychiatrist from Bloemfontein, testified that the young man was of less than average intelligence, but that he could be held responsible for his actions."
