Ronald W. Smith

Ron is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Sally, and brother Alden. He is also survived by sons Randy and Steve and granddaughters, Riley, Addison, and Danielle. Ron was pre-deceased by his parents, Glen and Beryl, and brother, Dick.

Ron grew up in Farmington, Maine where, starting at a young age he was very active in school and town activities. He was very proud of becoming an Eagle Scout. Ron passed his passion for scouting on to his sons and other young men. As an adult, Ron continued to play an active role in Farmington community affairs. He was a selectman and served on numerous town committees. Ron graduated from Farmington High School, Bentley College and Rutgers School of Banking.

As a career banker, Ron was well known throughout the state of Maine. He started in banking at the First National Bank in Farmington progressing through the ranks to become its president. Ron also held executive positions at Merrill Bank and Key Bank. He served as a director and president of the Maine Bankers Association. Ron retired from banking as president of a small community bank in Augusta.

Ron’s second career came in 1994 when his sons moved back to Maine to form their own company; Great Pond Technologies, Inc. Ron embraced this venture, running the financial aspects of the business until the family sold the business in 2002 at which time Ron retired again.

Ron was a lifelong skier who greatly enjoyed skiing at Sugarloaf Mt. with Sally, their boys and their granddaughters. He took up his second love, golf, after moving to Florida. Ron took an active role in the Quail Run Golf Course in Naples, Florida where he and Sally were members. He always enjoyed the beauty of his surroundings.

Ron will be greatly missed by both family and friends. The family will hold a private memorial service for Ron this summer. Donations may be made in Ron’s memory to the American Cancer Society.
