About Rory “Gillionan” MacNeil

Rory McNeil “Gillionan”
This man was a native of Castle Bay, in the island of Barra. He came to this parish in 1833 and settled in the eastern part of the Highlands. He was twice married. By his first wife he had three sons, Donald, John, and Laughlin. His second wife was Mary, daughter of John McNeil (Donald Ban). Issue: — one daughter, Christie, commonly called “a’ chruinneag.”
- Donald remained in Barra.
- John (Iain Ruairidh) settled on his father’s estate. He was a man of very independent nature, kind-hearted, but quick as fire to resent injustice. He married Catherine, daughter of John McDonald (Red), Highlands. No issue.
- Lauchlin came to this parish but died unmarried.
- Christie never married.
