About Rory "Rory Glen Mor" MacNeil, #001 & #009

Family #001 in "All Call Iona Home"

Rory (Donald "Og") married Margaret MacKinnon in Barra and their family: Donald, Malcolm, Eoin, Rory, Stephen, John, Mary, Annie, Sarah, and Catherine. After settling for a time in Barra Falls - in about 1817 - the family, with the exception of Donald, moved to Barra Glen in the Parish of lona. 1

Rory (Rory, Donald "Og"), commonly known as "Rory Glen Mor," married Catherine (lain, Eoin) MacNeil, Jamesville (see 57). They lived in Jamesville and their family: Rory, Sarah, Margaret, Catherine, Mary, Annie, and Mary Ann. "Rory Glen Mor" met with a singularly tragic ending. He and his daughter Catherine along with two MacNeil brothers who were neighbours of theirs but not relatives - Thomas and Angus MacNeil of Highland Hill - were coming from Baddeck on May 22, 1863. As they passed through the Grand Narrows Strait about dusk, the wind suddenly shifted from North to Northwest. It rose to such gale proportions, that landing at Jamesville was out of the question. Instead, they were forcefully driven out into the center of the Big Lake, and so furious a storm raged all night that the four of them perished. Indians sighted their boat the next morning off Indian Island (Johnstown). They left immediately for the scene and, together with others who had been scouting the lake, they came upon the gruesome spectacle of the four corpses securely fastened to the boat's interior. For the genealogy of the two MacNeil brothers from Highland Hill, see 191-193. 9
