About Rosehanna Gorman

BIRTH & BAPTISM First name(s) Rosehannah Last name Diver Sex Female Birth year 1859 Birth place St Kilda Father's name Sampson Jabez Mother's name Grace Mother's last name Pratt Registration number 6750 State Victoria Country Australia

I now think these articles are probably not about Rose since it seems fairly confirmed that Sampson took his family to Childers/Allambee East in 1880. The Ballarat Star 6 Nov 1883 FRIENDLY SOCIETIES. On Monday night last the Baptist Mutual Improvement Association held their usual weekly meeting, which, however, was not as usual, it being ladies night, that is, the meeting is entirely conducted by the lady members. The ladies, elect their own president and secretary, and the whole of the business of. the meeting is performed by the ladies. Mrs Parker was voted to ‘the chair, and Miss Wright to the position of secretary. There was a very large attendance, more than 60 members being present. Short papers were read by lady members as follows:—"Respect due to parents,’ Miss Dixon; "Usefulness," Miss Divers;- "Government and management of the tongue," Miss E. Pearson; “Love," Miss M. Wright; “Discrimination," Miss Wardle; “Lady Russell," Miss Barton; “ Happy homes" Miss Brown. The subjects were treated in a pithy and studied manner, and caused a good deal of comment, the ladies freely, criticising the productions.- Shortly after 9 o'clock the lady president announced that the programme could not be finished in the small-room, and desired those present, in order to complete it, to adjourn to the school room; where the ladies, Who thoroughly intended to show the gentleman members that they could conduct a meeting in quite as successful and pleasing a manner as their male compeers, bad prepared a pleasant surprise for all; tables being laid out, and provided with a variety of good things for the refreshment of the “ inner man." The ladies presided at the tables, and the highest praise is due to them for having so ably prepared an evening’s entertainment, which they so happily and successfully carried out. After the welcome cheer bad been partaken of a very hearty vote of thanks to the ladies was proposed, and accorded with right boisterous and jovial goodwill, to which Miss Divers suitably and modestly replied. Some pleasant conversation was then indulged in between members for a short time, and the meeting, • after singing "God save the Queen" in true patriotic manner, dispersed, all present expressing their appreciation of the way in which the ladies had conducted the meeting. The programme for next evening is an essay by Miss Menzies. ~ [I am fairly confident that Miss Divers is Rosehanna. Note the air of surprise that women could run a good meeting, rather like Darwin being surprised that a dog would walk on two legs.]

In 1883 Miss Divers with one of her sisters, also read essays at the Baptist MIA meetings.

In 1884 at the Baptist Literary Improvement Society, Miss Divers sang a song called "Forget". There is other evidence in docs which shows Rosehanna very active in Baptist circles while she lived at Ballarat.

The following is definitely either Rose or one of her sisters. Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate 26 Nov 1886 OPENING THE CHILDERS MECHANICS' INSTITUTE. (From a Correspondent.) The opening ceremony of the above took place on Friday evening last, and proved a post enjoyable affair. The first part consisted of a concert Mr. A. C. Groom, ML.A. presiding. The following ladies and gentlemen con tributed their quota :-Duet, "Home dearest home," Miss E.and C. Proctor; song; " Won't you buy my pretty flowers, Miss Packenham ; song, "The captive knight," Miss Proctor; song (comic), "Good-bye John," Mr.F. Hall; song " A boy's best friend is his mother,". Miss Hall; song, "Yesterday," Miss Diver, song," '"I'll be all smiles to-night," MissFanny Hall; song, " To the woods," Miss Teychenne; song, " When you've got the money, boys," Mr. J. Gunn; step dance, Messrs. Pearce and M'Donnell dialogue, "The heir at law,"characters by Messrs; W. Oxford, W..Diver and P. Davie.. After deserved votes of thanks to the performers and the chairman, this part of the entertainment concluded by singing theNational Anthem. The hall was then cleared, and the votaries of Terpsichore enjoyed them selves to the full for a few hours. The least that can be said is that all the performers merited the abundant applause that their efforts evoked. [This article places Grace (or one of her sisters) and William in Childers in 1886.]

MARRIAGE First name(s) Rosehannah Last name Diver Sex Female Marriage year 1890 Spouse's first name(s) James Spouse's last name Gorman State Victoria Country Australia Record set Victoria Marriages 1836-1942 Registration number 5192 Rose was 31 yrs old when she married James Gorman in 1890. James was 38yrs, so a late marriage for both. Because I cannot find a definite time for James to arrive in Childers before 1880, it is unclear how they met but it now seems probably that it was in Prahran when James worked as a road maker with Henry Evered - more in James' profile. [Jean Gorman was told by Aunty Nell Tilgner that Henry Evered and Athel Pitchforth were great friends of James - my notes from a conversation with Jean]

GAZETTE March 10 1893 LEASES.-TRANSFERS REGISTERED AT THE OFFICE OF TITLES. 4535 Sampson Jabez Diver to Rosehannah Gorman, Childers ... Allambee East Pt. 57 76 326 Warragul

26 Jan 1901 Gazette notices Application for crown grant—R. Gorman, Allambee East. [Len Gorman showed Malcolm and me the site of the Gorman farm on a hill-top at Childers. All I can imagine, since they only seem to have a selection at Childers, is that the place was called Allambee East by the surveyors]

1903 Census - Rose Hanna living at Allambee East (home duties) with Walter, age 12 yrs. Where is James?

1893: Sampson Diver, Rose's father, transfers to her name, a land selection at East Alambee.

1911, James dies at Childers and his will leaves everything to Walter James, expecting him to take care of Rosehannah and the younger children until she died. See docs.

After 1911, Rose also received occasional payments from the Shire Council either for goods or services provided.

The Yarragon, Trafalgar and Moe Settlement News Thu 22 Feb 1912 CHILDERS. A bushfire, which originated on the Allambee Reserve, spread over a large portion of this district on Friday last, causing considerable damage and loss to a number, of settlers. Messrs. Cooper, Richardson, McDonald, W. Diver and Miss Davis all sustained loss in the way of grass and fencing. In addition to grass and fencing, Mrs. Gorman lost hay stack and fowl house, while her dwelling was saved by the heroic efforts of Mr. Tilgner, assisted by other willing workers. Mr Tilgner was mounted on a burning stump 10 feet high, and situate close to the home. Buckets of water were rapidly passed to him, and he applied the liquid with such good effect that be eventually quenched the flames. At times the helpers threw water over him to prevent his clothes igniting. Had the fire got a thorough hold of the stump it would have gone like a raging furnace resulting in the inevitable destruction of the dwelling.

1914 Electoral Roll - Rose Hanna living at Childers with Grace Ellen Gorman and Walter James Gorman (farmer), her husband having died in 1911.

1917 Electoral Roll shows Elizabeth Minnie, Walter Gorman's new wife, living on the Gorman farm in the year the twins were born. It is highly probable that Walter and Lizzie were at Childers until the farm was sold at Rosehannah's death.

1919 Electoral Roll - Rose Hannah living at Childers with Walter James (farmer) and Elizabeth Minnie. The women are all recorded as home duties.

DEATH & BURIAL First name(s) Rose Hannah Last name Gorman Age 71 Sex Female Birth year 1859 Death year 1930 Father's name Sampson Jabers Divers Mother's name Grace Pratt Death place Moe State Victoria Registration number 2619 Rosehannah dies at Childers in 1930 but there is no marker for her grave at Thorpdale/Childers Cemetery (nor for James Gorman, Jabez Diver, Emily Diver, Sampson Diver - any of the Divers). The Diver house still exists, but Tuebrook is gone. In 1932 Walter and Lizzie are farewelled from Childers and move to Metung on the Gippsland Lakes, so the farm was probably sold in 1931/32.

I can't find a township map of Childers so can't tell if the Gormans had selections at Childers and Allambee East, or if different location names are used for the same places. Childers and Allambee East are not far apart. Between them they seem to have selected and then got title to, 5 lots of farmland in two areas, both in Allambee East according to the map. Sampson transferred a piece of land to Rose in 1893. Do they have more on a different map? There are no Divers on the Allambee map so I suspect more land in Childers.

For reasons I don't understand, the letters from Maurice and Paddy might not appear in page order, or perhaps even letter order. There will be repeats of some, to ensure we got readable versions. Thanks to Malcolm they are all dated, and you will be able to figure out what goes with what. Sorry about that.

There are other Gorman and O'Gorman families in the area. Gormandale has several and is named for John Gorman born Ireland C1837, who settled there with Timothy O'Connor - In company with the late John Gorman, deceased (Timothy O'Connor) was the prime mover in making the Gormandale Crossing. Traralgon Record 5 Aug 1910. The mounted policeman is Constable James Gorman who has a family, and there is the O'Gorman family of Morwell Park and Merrivale Park, a large dynasty of wealthy farmers, and O'Gormans arrive in Childers circa 1910 when new selections are released.
