ACTING CORONER'S INQUIRY.
VERDICT OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH
Owing to the fact that the court houe was being used for Petty Sessions business, the Acting Deputy
Coroner's inquiry Into the death of Chas. Thomas Stone, who was Mlled at a sawmill at Sea View, was held at the Warragul police station, on Tuesday last. Senior Constable Gunther appeared on behalf of the police to assist the
Acting Deputy Coroner (Mr A. J. Harvey, J.P.).
Athol Leonard Gorman, mill hand, residing at Childers, stated that about 11.30 a.m. on 23rd March, he was working with the deceased at the sawmill at Sea View. He was "heading" off a tree, which was lying on the side of a steep hill. The tree had hit another stump when it fell, the result being that the tree split into two, about 20 feet from the head. One side of the split was cut off by witness, and then the tree slipped forward, opening up again as
it slipped'^ down hill. Deceased, who was standing on the "trunk, apparently slipped into the split, which suddenly sprang together again. Stone was caught by the left buttock. "Witness cut away the split with the help of John Roland Cook, and Stone was thus released. Deceased was then taken to the West Gippsland Hospital, in Mr Broomfield's motor car.
John Roland Cook, mill hand, residing at Sea View, stated that he was present with the last witness and deceased, when they were chopping down timber. The evidence given by Mr Gorman was true and correct.
Dr. Smith gave medical evidence that Stone died as the result of profound shock. Deceased was badly
crushed.
The Acting Coroner returned a finding that Chas. Thomas Stone met his death accidentally, when felling a tree at Sea View, and that no blame was attachable to anyone. The thanks of the court were tendered to the witnesses, who had given up a whole day in order to relate their version of the accident.
