REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN:
Enlisted in the Continental Army in May of 1777. He joined the Eighth Regiment Connecticut Line, Captain Munson's Company, as a private for three years, initially serving at Peekskill NY where it was fortified to deter the British from advancing up the Hudson. Fought at Battle of Germantown in October, then ordered to defend Philadelphia from British incursion by guarding the Delaware River at Fort Mercer or Red Bank, and Fort Mifflin.
Roswell Catlin spent the winter at Valley Forge. Through monthly muster rolls, we have a record of his duty from December of 1777 to June of 1778. ...

After winter quarters at Valley Forge the Eighth Regiment battled the British Army at MONMOUTH NJ on June 28, 1778. The battle was noted for the extreme heat that the soldiers suffered and in which they fought. Roswell Catlin would record of this battle that "[he] was [sickened] by the heat [from] which he has never recovered..."
