Photo, REF. A. H. Catlin, "31st Dec.1777" Document relating to Captain Eli Catlin obtaining provisions from the selectmen of Litchfield, for his company, while on leave from Valley Forge. Viz:

"Recd 31st Dec. 1777 of the Selectmen of Litchfield one Blankett cost [??] and one other blankett cost 18[?] for the use of two soldiers belonging to Litchfield lately enlisted into the Continental Army in my Company

recd [signed] Eli Catlin Capt."

Interestingly, this document is written on paper water-marked with the English Crown and the initials "GR" which signifies it as official property of the Crown - George Rex, King of England.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN:

Enlisted at age 41; served at the Siege of Boston (at Roxbury), 1st Lieutenant, 7th CONNECTICUT MILITIA, 6th Jul to 31st December 1775.

Ref. "The Catlins Remembered", Chap.II, The American Revolution and its Aftermath, by Gary R. Catlin, Chesapeake, Va., 2011:

Reenlisted 1st Jan. to 31st Dec. 1776, as 1st Lieutenant in the 19TH REGIMENT CONTINENTAL ARMY under command of Charles Webb. The regiment was billeted in winter quarters until March 15th '76 when General Washington ordered the Nineteenth Regiment to march to Norwich, Connecticut and then at Norwich to procure ships to sail to New York. After marching 93 miles, the regiment arrived at Norwich, then marched to New London where it boarded ships destined for New York. By April the regiment had arrived in New York and eventually pitched tents at "the Bowery" on Manhattan Island.

On July 2, 1776 at "Camp New York", Lieutenant Eli Catlin was listed [see Return of the Officers of Col. Webb's Regiment] as among the officers for the Nineteenth Regiment [including Captain Nathan Hale]. The regiment would remain camped here until forced from New York City by the British.

Again reenlisted as CAPTAIN, 5TH CONNECTICUT LINE CONTINENTAL ARMY, commanded by Col. Philip Bradley, on 1st Jan. 1777 to serve in the New Jersey and Philadelphia campaigns, including the Battle of Germantown with the Left Wing Continentals under Major Gen. Nathanael Greene.

Winter-camped with Col. Bradley's Regiment at VALLEY FORGE, PA.; Resigned 25th May 1778, age 44, before the Spring campaign.

Identified by the DAR 95522. Congressional Pension Number: S 40812.

Removed to Luzerne Pennsylvania with his son Putnam in 1786. Died at Hop Bottom, Susquehanna Pennsylvania 1820.
