He initially apprenticed as a carpenter to Walter Frank Holmes in Howick, then farmed at Otto's Bluff and Ixopo before his marriage. Thereafter they lived at "Rocky Glen", Lufafa Road, in the Ixopo district for about 5 years, before moving to "Fairview", also in the Ixopo district, a farm which he bought and where they lived for a number of years. In 1934 they moved to Elandskop and "Vaalhoek", in the Impendhle district. He retired to Winterskloof, on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg, but later shifted to Eshowe, Zululand, and finally back to 11 Greyling St, Pietermaritzburg.
