About Rozalia (Rose) Oestreicher
Rose was one of 9 children, who came with her family to the United States from what was at that time Krakau, Austria. She spoke German, Yiddish and English. The family first lived in Washington, D.C.,where her mother had a dry goods and notions shop, and her father worked in jewelry and watchmaking. By the late 1880s the entire family was in the U.S., and in 1900 the family moved to New York City. She married into the Oestreicher family, who were also German speaking Jews from the western region of Bohemia. "Oestreichers" was a picture framing, home goods, and art store in New York City. Founded in 1898, it was in business until the 1980s, when her grandson Michael Oestreicher recieved the business, and sold the New York real estate. Great Grandma Rose was beloved by her children and grandchildren, and grandson Lloyd Oestreicher remembers that she was adamant that the family business be shared equally between her son Edward Oestreicher, and daughter Ruth Oestreicher Green. Written By her Great Granddaughter Rowena Zylali.
