Rufus was a twin to Samuel Wright Sellers.

Per "The Heritage of Houston County":
Rufus was a schoolteacher. He transacted business between Montgomery and Union Springs, riding on horseback and using saddlebags. He studied tailoring, was a census enumerator, and a tax collector. In 1858 Rufus was ordained a Methodist Minister and Deacon. After he moved to Henry County, Rufus organized Cottonwood Methodist Church (called Zada) and Rocky Creek Methodist Church. Rufus was commissioned to build the first post office in Cottonwood and was first postmaster.
