Winona Repulican Herald -- July 16, 1946 Alma Soldier Dies of Polio on Luzon Alma, Wis. -- (Special) -- Private First Class Russell E. Gueltzow, 22, Alma, died of infantile paralysis on Luzon Island in the Phillippine (sic) Islands following an attack of the disease June 29. His grandmother, Mrs. Emilie Fetting, Alma, received a telegram from Edward G. Witsell, adjutant general of the army July 6, expressing the regret of the secretary of war at the illness of Private Gueltzow. Following this, a second telegram notified her of his death. He was born March 30, 1924, at Buffalo City, Wis., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Gueltzow. He had lived with Mrs. Fetting since he was a child. Private Gueltzow entered the army August 15, 1945, and was trained at Sheppard Field, Texas, and at Lincoln, Neb. He was in Alma last March and then was sent overseas. Survivors include his father and his grandmother.
