Ruth was an amazing woman. After losing her husband in 1931 she was left to care for 8 children without any assistance from other sources than the income she received as a janitor in Nylund school. the 2 youngest twins were not even 2 years old. The older girls held down the fort while she washed at night. She had a strong faith and was fiercly independant, and maintained her job till her children were on their own. She retired from that job sometime in the 60's. She was used to difficult times. As a child she lost her father very early, and in those days ther was no social assistance, so she hired out as a gjeter jente at Storhaug farm in Valestrand og "gikk paa legd". Her brother Johannes wrote a story about the family, and what they had to do just to feed themselves is almost foregn to us today. In her later years she remarried Paul Stangeland, and she had many happy years with him.
