About Ruth Jeanette Weinberg

Ruth Jeanette Mindlin Weinberg, 97, beloved wife of the late Bertram Ullman Weinberg, died peacefully in her sleep on June 16, 2013, surrounded by her large and loving family. Ruth was the youngest of five daughters born to Max and Celia (Socolof) Mindlin in East Orange, N.J., on Aug. 27, 1915. The Mindlin sisters were exceptionally close all of their lives. Lillian Semel, Pauline Forman, Mildred Burstein and then the baby, Ruthie, followed Sadie Aaron, the eldest. When Bert Weinberg interviewed head counselors for his family's summer camp, Pocono Highland, Ruth landed the job and a husband in the bargain. Ruth and Bert were married in 1939 and had four children: the late Patricia Lee Smith (Dr. Robert), Nancy Winston (late Laurence Levine, late James V. Higgins), Max Weinberg (Rebecca), and Abby Levin (Michael). Ruth leaves eight grandchildren who adored her beyond measure, Dr. Michelle Goncalves (Manny), Dr. Nicole Steckler (Matt), Sharon Boyd (Scott), Dani Kupperman (Justin), Ali Weinberg, Jay Weinberg, Jake Levin, and Noah Levin, and 11 great-grandchildren, Alexa, Jack, Lina, Noa, Amanda, Sabrina, Ben, Joseph, Finn, Bryce and Layla. Ruth Weinberg taught physical education in the Newark school system for 26 years. With Bert, she owned and operated Pocono Highland Camps in Marshall's Creek, Pa., and Laurel Lake Camp in Tyler Hill, Pa. She was a lifelong member of Hadassah, as well as Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel of the Oranges. Her father, Max, was one of the founding members of Sharey Tefilo in East Orange. She loved Broadway musicals, Hershey bars, organizing and winning at Mahjong and Canasta, and being with her large and loving family, of which she was the very proud matriarch. Ruth traveled the world with her son, Max, drummer with the E-Street Band. Members of the band always called her "Mighty Mommy," and mighty she was. She will be greatly missed. A private graveside service will be held on Monday, June 17, with a future memorial to be announced.
