About SSgt. David Dean Shunkwiler
David Dean Shunkwiler, 76, of Grand Island died Friday, Sept. 23, 2016.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home with military honors rendered by the U.S. Air Force and Grand Island Veterans’ Honor Guard. Daniel Naranjo will officiate. Burial will be in Fort McPherson National Cemetery.
David was born May 13, 1940, in Fairfield, to Wesley and Alvera (Wallenburg) Shunkwiler.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; sons, Darren (Rebekah) Shunkwiler of Palmer and William Shunkwiler of Grand Island; two grandsons, Justin Harris and Logan Shunkwiler; brothers, Wesley D. (Maxine) Shunkwiler of Fairfield, Kenneth Shunkwiler of Lincoln, Keith Shunkwiler of Grand Island and William Shunkwiler of Grove, Okla.; sisters, Marlene Neilson of Mankato, Kan. and Linda (Roger) Kerbeck of Lawrence; sister-in-law, Del Shunkwiler of Prosper, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Curtis Shunkwiler.
David grew up in Fairfield, graduating from Fairfield High School, Class of 1958. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1962, serving tours in Turkey, Pakistan and Japan. Serving his country as a cryptologist for the Air Force, David was honorably discharged in 1967. Upon his discharge, he returned to Grand Island.
David married Linda Aldrich on Jan. 12, 1969, in the Fullerton Methodist Church. He was employed by the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and then for Chief Industries, Building Division for 36 years, from which he retired. A coffee-aholic at Chief, David was known for making “killer” coffee.
David was a Husker fan before the Cornhuskers were able to fill their stadium.
