Origins

of the Locke family of New Hampshire

From https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hermins-7

The following is a review of the origins of the Locke Family of New Hampshire.

Nathaniel Locke Sr marries an unknown 1st wife in England. They have two children:

Captain John Locke, carpenter, born say 1626 in England died 1696[1] (aged 70 when he died in 1996) arrived by Jan 1656/7, married Elizabeth Berry daughter of William Berry and Joan Unknown.[2] He has many children Nathaniel Locke Jr arrives by 1672 leaves a widow by 5 Mar 1674 who is appointed a teacher a Great Island. Her name is unknown. They have no offspring.[3][4]

Nathaniel Locke Sr marries second to Sabina Hermins who is very young. They have two younger children:[5]

Judith Locke born 1656 dies 19 Jan 1753, marries William Berry first and second Nathaniel Huggens.[3] Sabina Locke born 1662, marries first William Berry, second Abraham Lewis and their John Philbrick.[3] Captain John Locke arrives in New England first by Jan 1656/7.[3] Nathaniel Locke possibly doesn't arrive until 1672. Either Sabina (Hermins) Locke arrives as a widow in 1660 with her two daughters or she arrives with her husband and two daughters and her husband promptly dies within weeks of their arrival.[3]

Widow Sabina (Hermins) Locke married Captain William Marston and has a daughter:[3]

Tryphena Marston. Tryphena Marston marries Joseph Philbrick. William Marston dies 1672 and widow Sabina (Hermins) [Locke] Marston married third to John Redman.[3]

    • Nathaniel Locke of Portsmouth
  • Another Locke was in Portsmouth and vicinity, contemporary with John, as appears from the following deposition made May 10, 1810 by Jonathan and David Locke, and was perhaps a brother of Captain John Locke.
  • "This may certify to whom it may concern, that the following genealogy of the ancestors, in substance as followeth, hath been told unto us by our forefathers, the truth to which we attest, viz.: 1st. We say that Jonathan Palmer, deceased, was the son and lawful heir to Christopher Palmer and Elizabeth Palmer. 2nd., Christopher Palmer's wife Elizabeth, was daughter and lawful heir to William and Judith Berry. (A mistake, see record below). 3rd., William Berry's wife Judith was daughter and lawful heir to the Locke and his wife who came from England, said Locke's wife name before marriage was Hermins, and she brought with her into New England, a coat of arms so called, which referred to John Hermins. William Berry's wife Judith was daughter and lawful heir to Nathaniel Locke and his wife, whose name previous to marriage was Hermins."
  • The records of Portsmouth give the following items: "March 4 & 5, 1672, Nathaniel Locke did two days work on Highways at Great Island (New Castle) and Sept. 30, 1672, a noate was drawn on Henry Dering for Nathaniel Locke for six shillings". Another record is "At a meeting of the Selectmen this 5th., March 1674-5 upon motion made by Widow Locke to live in the school house on the Great Island in order to the teaching of children to read and sew, have granted her desire". Undoubtedly the widow of Nathaniel's as this name does not appear again except in John's family. Tradition says that the other Locke not John, left no sons, but is silent as to daughters.

    • SABINA LOCKE, called of Dover, m. Dec. 19, 1689, by Rev. John Pike, WILLIAM BERRY. (I place Sabina as a possible dau. of Nathaniel's because of her age, and because the family of John Locke is known.)

  • .... etc.
  • There has been an impression on the minds of a few individuals that there was another Locke at Hampton or in the vicinity, at an early period. In 1810, May 10, Jonathan and David Locke made the following deposition, which is preserved at Rye.
  • "This may certify to whom it may concern, that the following genealogy of the ancestors, in substance as followeth, hath been told unto us by our forefathers, the truth to which we attest to, viz. : 1st, We say that Jonathan Palmer, deceased, was the son and lawful heir to Christopher Palmer and Elizabeth Palmer.
  • 2d. Christopher Palmer's wife Elizabeth, was daughter and lawful heir to William and Judith Berry.
  • 3d. William Berry's wife Judith was daughter and lawful heir to the Locke and his wife who came from England, said Locke's wife's name before marriage was Hermins, and she brought with her into New England a coat of arm, so called, which referred to John Hermins. William Berry's wife Judith was daughter and lawful heir to Nathaniel Locke and his wife, whose name previous to marriage was Hermins."
  • The facts here stated are not wholly to be relied on. The records of Rye show that Christopher Palmer m. Elizabeth Locke, July 24, 1705, and that their son, Jonathan was b. May 16, 1707. How William Berry and his wife Judith became mixed up in the story I know not, but think it is possible that Judith, the wife of William Berry, was the wid. of Nathaniel Locke, and the mother by said Locke of Elizabeth Locke, who m. Christopher Palmer.
  • The records of Portsmouth give evidence that there was a Nathaniel Locke there in 1672.
  • "Mh. 4 & 5, 1672, Nathaniel Locke did two days work on Highways at Great Island" (New Castle) and Sep. 30, 1672, a noate was drawn on Henry Dering for Nathaniel Locke for six shillings." Another record is "At a meeting of the Selectmen this 5th March 1674-5, upon motion made by Widow Locke to live in the school house on the Great Island in order to the teaching of children to read and sew, have granted her desire." Was she not the wid. of Nathaniel before mentioned? I will only add, that tradition says that the other Locke (not
  • https://archive.org/stream/bookoflockesgene00lock#page/326/mode/1up
  • John) left no sons. John and Nathaniel were probably brothers, and perhaps were the sons of John Locke, of London, who m. Christian French, July 26, 1624, and had John, b. Sep. 16, 1627, and Nathaniel, b. Nov. 11, 1629. _______________________

"Dow gives Sabina's name as PAGE and writes that she was the daughter of Deacon Robert and Lucy (WARDE) PAGE." Joseph Dow. "History of the Town of Hampton, New Hampshire, from its Settlement in 1638, to the Autumn of 1892" Salem, Mass., (1893).

"It is quite probable that his first wife lived until 1660. Then about 1662, when about seventy years old, he (William MARSTON) married a second time to Sabrina Page, aged 18 or 20, daughter of Robert and Lucia Page, of Ormesby, Norfolk Co., England., by whom he had one daughter Tryphena." Nathan Washington Marston, "The Marston Genealogy" (1888).

another source, i.e. Mary Lovering Holman in "Marston English Genealogy", (1929), pgs.37-38, states only 'He married secondly, probably about 1660, Sabina _____, who survived and married secondly, John Redman'."

Henry Whittemore in "Genealogical Guide to the Early Settlers of America" (1967) writes that according to Coffin, William Marston, Sr.'s second wife was Sabina, daughter of Robert Page.

C.A.Torrey in New England Marriages Prior to 1700 has her as "Sabina..Page?/ Locke? But it seems she was not a Locke. (It has been suggested that William MARSTON's Sr's first wife was Goody Sarah LOCKE. This also is unproven, but would explain a little of Torrey's "?" marks. The "Goody" is not a name, but a title, being short for GoodWife, the equivalent of Mrs.)

Noyes/Libby/Davis, "Genealogical Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire," (1939), pg. 462. states her name as Sabina Hemins" "William Martson's widow named Sabina, who was the executrix of his will. She had borne him one child, but it is evident that his other children were by a former marriage. His widow married, second, John Redman."
