Salamon Haskiel's 1837 birth certificate is found on LDS microfilm #702383 for the town of Dzialoszyn, akt 21. This 1837 document indicates that the Salamon was born in Dzialoszyn on March 29, 1837 at 8 o'clock in the evening; that he was named in a religious ceremony; that the father, Icyk Haskiel, a ‘kupiec' (a buyer), was 22 at the time; and that the mother Anna (Hana) was age 27 (the latter age seems unlikely to be correct). [NOTE: About five weeks after Salamon Haskiel was born, Szalama (Shlomo) Haskiel was born to parents Yosef Haskiel (age 27) and his wife Estera (age 18) in Dzialoszyn, Poland on May 1, 1837 at 6 AM (Dzialoszyn 1837, akt 24). The relationship between Salamon and Szalama (if any) is unknown].
Birth records have been found for five of Salamon/Shlomo Zalman and Esther Rashka's children, all born in Wielun, Poland (Gubernia: Kalisz; Province: Lodz) (see LDS microfilms #753122 and 760136, and Polish State Archives for Wielun for 1863 and 1871). Salomon HASKLOWICZ and Estera Racha CYMERSMAN/CYMERMAN (ie., Zimmerman) are recorded as having the following children:
1) Icek Jankiel, born in 1863; 2) Dawid, born in 1864, when Salomon was age 27 and Estera was 25; 3) Aron Siamsie (Simon Aron), born in 1866, when Salomon was age 29 and Estera was 28. These ages correspond to a birth year of 1837 for Shlomo Zalman and 1838-1839 for Esther Rashka; 4) Hana Shaindlya, born on December 3/15 1868 at 10 PM, when both parents were age 32; and 5) Dwojra on May 18/30, 1871 when Salamon was 32 and Estera was 28.
Salamon's profession is variously listed as a buckle-maker and a tin man ('Blacharz'). Note that the oldest son and the oldest daughter were given the names of Salamon's parents, Icyk and Hana; the second son was given the name of Salamon's two grandfathers, Dawid. Birth records for the three oldest sons (1863-1866) are in Polish; those of the daughters (1868-1871) are in Russian. Birth records have not yet been found for the youngest child, Joseph, who may not have been born in Wielun. Daughter Hana Shaindlya was not known to Salamon and Estera's grandchildren living in the U.S., suggesting that she may have died at a young age.
Confirmation and validation is provided by the U.S. Petition for Naturalization for Shlomo Zalman and Esther Rashka's son Simon, which indicates that Simon was born in 1866 in Wielun, Russia (also see further details under Simon Aaron Haskel).
Shlomo Zalman was a builder. According to Saul Haskel, the family was originally from Spain, and had the Hebrew name 'Haskel'. When the family migrated to Poland, the name was changed to 'Haskelowicz'. Upon emigration of his children to the US, the family name was Anglicized to Haskel (or in some cases to Haskell).
Shlomo Zalman died in 1914, after four of his five children emigrated with their families to America. His tombstone can be found today in the Czestochowa Jewish Cemetary, and confirms that his father's name was Yitzchok. It is one of the stones cataloged in a 1997 project, and is listed on the web page: http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Rue/4017/CZESLIGH.HTM -- Szlomo Zalman ben Jzak Hasklowicz, died in 1914 (Tombstone ref. #2061).
