About Sallie Lucy Seabolt

www.geni.com/media/proxy?media_id=6000000206104520854&size=medium
Sallie was a Cherokee woman

The Western Cherokees, or "Old Settlers," began occupying the area in 1829 after they moved from Arkansas. After 1840 Muldrow existed in the Skin Bayou District (renamed the Sequoyah District in 1851) of the Cherokee Nation. The community coalesced prior to 1888 when the Kansas and Arkansas Valley Railway built its tracks through the region.

In 1909 the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway acquired the local line, and in 1917 it became part of the Missouri Pacific system. By 1910 Muldrow's population had climbed to 671, and by 1911 the town supported two banks, a newspaper, telephone service, two cotton gins, several retail stores, a hotel, three doctors, and many other businesses.

Biography:
Sallie Lucy Seabolt (Proctor) was born c. 1877 in Indian Territory, Cherokee Nation to parents Thomas Proctor and Sallie Killer. Sallie married twice, first to ____ Wofford b. 1895 and had one son, Levi, (PFC Levi Wofford Seabolt is buried in Feathers Cemetery in Adair County, OK.) she married second Scott Seabolt b. 1898 and had four children, Lizzie, Charles, Ella Mae, and Tinnie Emma. Both marriages were Indian style in that she "lived as married" without civil processes, the 1920 Federal Census therefore seems to be in error when it says she was widowed.

According to Carla Joinson in her book Vanished in Hiawatha, Sallie was admitted to the Canton Asylum on September 29, 1917, but her diagnosis is unknown.

In the letter dated February 17, 1934, to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Dr. L.L. Culp advises that Sallie was from Muskogee, Oklahoma, died at the Canton Asylum on July 9, 1922, and was buried in the Canton Hiawatha Cemetery in tier 6 plot 40.

Her profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
